Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

He was lucky he had it, because tracking down the driver was a lost cause, and at least he didn’t have to eat the whole repair bill.

Honestly, I get the logic, but I still feel like it’s a bit backwards. We’re all paying because some folks can’t be bothered to follow the rules. Sure, it saved your neighbor’s Chevelle, but isn’t that just letting the real culprits off the hook? I’d rather see tougher enforcement or stiffer penalties for uninsured drivers than just making everyone else pay more. Maybe that’s naive, but it bugs me.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. You said,

We’re all paying because some folks can’t be bothered to follow the rules.
That’s what rubs me the wrong way too. Why should people who actually do things by the book have to shell out extra just because others don’t care? I mean, I get that uninsured motorist coverage is there to protect us from the worst-case scenario, but it still feels like a band-aid instead of a real fix.

But here’s what I keep wondering: even if Nebraska (or anywhere) cranked up enforcement or made penalties harsher, would it really stop people who are already ignoring the law? Or would it just mean more fines that never get paid? At some point, does it just become another cost for everyone else anyway? Curious if anyone’s seen a place where tougher rules actually made a dent in uninsured drivers, or is this just one of those things we’re stuck with?

I get the frustration, but honestly, I’ve seen stricter enforcement work in some states—at least to a point. When I lived in Texas, they started using electronic verification for insurance, and it actually cut down on uninsured drivers for a while. But yeah, there’s always going to be a group that just won’t comply, no matter how tough the penalties are. That’s why the coverage exists in the first place... it’s not perfect, but it’s better than being left high and dry if someone hits you and can’t pay.

I actually had a run-in with this exact issue a couple years ago, except it was in Iowa. I was rear-ended on my way to work by a guy who, turns out, didn’t have any insurance at all. I remember thinking, “How is that even possible?” but apparently it happens more than you’d think. My own insurance covered it, but I had to pay my deductible and deal with the hassle.

When I moved to Nebraska, I was surprised too that uninsured motorist coverage is mandatory, but after what happened, I kinda get it. Like you said,

“there’s always going to be a group that just won’t comply, no matter how tough the penalties are.”
That’s been my experience too. Even if the state cracks down, some folks just roll the dice.

From a budget angle, I don’t love paying for extra coverage, but honestly? After getting burned once, I’d rather have that safety net. It stings less than getting stuck with the bill when someone else messes up.

Yeah, the number of folks driving around without insurance is wild. I’ve seen people try to hand over expired cards like it’s a library book. Honestly, I’d rather pay a bit more upfront than have my wallet cry later... learned that the hard way.
