Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I totally get your point about peace of mind. I used to think uninsured motorist coverage was just another way for insurance companies to squeeze more out of us, but after my neighbor got stuck with a massive bill from a hit-and-run, I started seeing it differently. The odds might be low, but the risk is real. For me, it’s worth budgeting for—just feels safer knowing I won’t be left hanging if something unexpected happens.

Honestly, I used to roll my eyes at all the “extra” coverage too, but after having kids, my priorities shifted. Here’s how I look at it: 1) Check what your state actually requires—Nebraska surprised me too. 2) Figure out what your deductible is and if you could really cover it in a worst-case scenario. 3) If not, that uninsured motorist coverage is a no-brainer. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than get slammed with a bill I can’t handle. It’s not about the odds, it’s about not gambling with your family’s safety.

That’s the bottom line for me too. I used to think the same way—why bother with all these “what if” coverages? But after seeing a friend get hit by an uninsured driver and then stuck with medical bills, I realized it’s not just paranoia. It happens more than people think.

One thing I’d add: even if you’re a careful driver, you can’t control what other people do. Nebraska making uninsured motorist coverage mandatory actually makes sense when you look at how many folks drive around without insurance or with the bare minimum. It’s frustrating to pay more, but honestly, the alternative is worse.

I still think some insurance add-ons are just money grabs, but uninsured motorist isn’t one of them. If you can’t easily swallow a big repair bill or medical expenses out of pocket, that extra monthly cost is just part of being realistic.

Didn’t even know about the Nebraska rule until I started shopping around for my first policy. I’ll be honest, my first reaction was “another thing to tack onto the bill?” but after reading stories like this, I get why it’s there.

- I used to think I’d just skip the extras. But I don’t have a big emergency fund, so if someone hits me and they’re not covered… I’m basically screwed.
- The idea that you can be the safest driver on the road and still get stuck with someone else’s mess is kinda wild.
- I agree, some add-ons feel pointless (like rental car coverage—I barely drive as it is). But uninsured motorist? Seems like one of the few that actually protects you from stuff you can’t control.

Still feels weird to pay for other people’s mistakes, but I guess that’s just how it goes. At least now I know I’m not just getting scammed for another “optional” thing.

Never thought much about it either until I started restoring my '72 Chevelle. Parts aren't cheap, and if some uninsured yahoo T-bones me, I'm out way more than just a deductible. Like you said,

“you can be the safest driver on the road and still get stuck with someone else’s mess”
—that hits home. Annoying to pay for other people’s screw-ups, but I’d rather be annoyed than broke. Rental coverage still feels pointless though... my car spends more time in the garage than on the road anyway.
