- Had both Shelter and State Farm quotes last year when we bought our place in St. Louis.
- Shelter’s agent actually sat down with us and explained what “water backup” really covers—State Farm just sent a PDF and said “call if you have questions.”
- Price was close, but Shelter’s deductible options were clearer.
- Claims process? Haven’t had to use it (knock on wood), but my neighbor said Shelter paid out fast after a hailstorm.
- Fine print is brutal, but I made a spreadsheet to compare exclusions—Shelter had fewer weird carve-outs for stuff like sump pump failure.
- Not saying State Farm’s bad, but I felt less like I was being sold something with Shelter.

Shelter’s agents really do seem to go the extra mile. I’ve seen folks get pretty confused by “water backup” and sump pump exclusions, so having someone walk you through it is gold. State Farm’s PDFs are thorough but...not exactly riveting bedtime reading. Your neighbor’s quick hail claim with Shelter lines up with what I’ve heard—fast payouts, less red tape. Both companies have their quirks, but Shelter does make the fine print a little less painful to decode.

I actually had a different experience with State Farm—when our basement flooded, their agent was super patient and explained all the confusing stuff about what was and wasn’t covered. The paperwork was a bit much, but they were upfront about it. Shelter sounds great for folks who want hand-holding, but I think State Farm’s not as cold as people say...just more by-the-book, maybe? Both seem solid, just depends what kind of support you want.

That’s a pretty fair take. I’ve seen folks get frustrated with State Farm’s process, but honestly, most big insurers are gonna have a lot of paperwork—just the nature of the beast if you want things covered right. Being upfront about what’s not included is actually a good sign in my book. If you’re budget-minded, sometimes that “by-the-book” approach saves headaches later. Shelter’s more personal touch is nice, but it can come at a price. Just gotta weigh what matters most to you and your wallet.

Honestly, I’ve seen folks get sticker shock with Shelter when it comes to renewals. State Farm might feel like you’re signing your life away with paperwork, but at least you know what you’re getting. I’d rather deal with red tape than surprise fees down the road.
