Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

I get where you’re coming from—insurance companies love their fine print. I had a buddy who let his cousin drive his ‘68 Mustang (not even that often), and when the cousin got rear-ended, the insurance dragged their feet for weeks. They kept asking about how often he drove it, whether he had “regular access,” all that jazz. In the end, they paid out, but it was a hassle. Makes me wonder... is it even worth the risk for something as irreplaceable as a classic? Would you trust a friend with your pride and joy, or just say no?

Honestly, I’ve been in a similar spot, though not with a classic. Let a friend use my daily driver once, and even though nothing happened, the whole time I was stressing about “what if.” Insurance is just too unpredictable for my taste. I’d probably just say no for anything valuable or sentimental.

I get where you’re coming from, but I kinda feel like if you trust your friend enough to hand over the keys, it’s not worth stressing the whole time. I mean, yeah, insurance is a headache, but isn’t that what it’s for? I’ve let buddies borrow my car for quick errands and never had an issue—maybe I’m just too chill about it. If it was something super rare or sentimental, though, I’d probably think twice. Still, for a daily driver, I don’t see the harm as long as you know who you’re dealing with.

I get the whole “trust your friends” angle, but I’ve had a weird experience with this. A few years back, my roommate borrowed my car for a Target run—no big deal, right? Well, he got rear-ended (not his fault), but dealing with insurance was still a hassle. Turns out, permissive use covered it, but my rates went up anyway. Now I’m way more cautious. For me, if it’s just a one-off and they’re a good driver, fine... but if it’s gonna be regular, I’d rather add them to the policy and avoid surprises. Insurance companies love their loopholes.

Man, you nailed it there. I let a buddy take my BMW to pick up pizza once—came back with a tiny scratch and suddenly I’m on the phone with my agent for hours. Even when it’s not your friend’s fault, it’s your headache. I totally get being cautious now. Adding someone to the policy is a pain, but at least you know where you stand if something goes sideways.
