Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Couldn’t agree more with the “paranoia is just good planning” bit. I’ve seen people try to save a few bucks by relying on permissive use, only to get burned when the insurance company starts splitting hairs over what counts as “permission.” It’s wild how fast things can go sideways. Honestly, paying a little extra for peace of mind—and to avoid awkward money talks with friends—just makes sense. Not worth risking a friendship over a technicality.

Honestly, I think people overcomplicate this. If you trust your friend and your policy covers permissive use, why pay more? I’ve let buddies borrow my car for years—never had an issue. Sometimes the extra cost just isn’t justified.

I get where you're coming from, but have you ever wondered how it plays out if your friend actually gets into an accident? Like, does your rate go up even if it’s not you driving? I’m always torn—on one hand, saving money is great, but on the other, I worry about getting stuck with a higher premium down the line. Anyone had their rates jump after a friend borrowed their car and something happened?

That’s exactly my struggle. I let my brother use my car for a weekend up north and—luckily—nothing happened, but I was sweating it the whole time. From what I understand, if your friend gets in an accident, your insurance is still on the hook since it’s your car. Even if you weren’t driving, your rates can go up because it counts as a claim on your policy. Feels a bit unfair, but that’s how they get you. I’d rather pay a few bucks more upfront than risk a big hike later... but man, those premiums already hurt.

Not sure I totally agree that adding someone is always worth the extra cost. Permissive use is there for a reason—if it’s just the occasional weekend or road trip, most policies in MN will cover a “guest driver” under your existing plan. Sure, if they crash, it’s still your insurance, but unless they’re a really risky driver, the odds are low for a short trip.

I get being nervous though. I’ve let friends drive on camping trips and yeah, I double-check my coverage every time. But honestly, if you’re only lending your car once in a while, paying to add them as a listed driver feels like overkill. If someone’s borrowing your car regularly? Then yeah, probably safer to add them. Otherwise, I’d just make sure they’re a decent driver and cross my fingers...

Insurance companies already squeeze us enough as it is—no need to hand them more cash unless you really have to.
