Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Honestly, I’ve read those “permissive use” sections like five times and still don’t totally trust them. I get that insurance is supposed to cover friends in a pinch, but what if something happens and the company finds some loophole? My cousin got burned once because her friend borrowed her car for “a couple days” and then slid into a mailbox—insurance tried to wiggle out of it. Personally, I’d rather just add someone if there’s any doubt. It’s not worth the stress, especially with how unpredictable MN roads get in winter.

Totally get where you’re coming from. Those “permissive use” clauses always feel a bit slippery, and insurance companies definitely know how to find the tiniest technicality. I’ve seen people assume they’re covered, only to get stuck with a huge bill because the friend borrowed the car for longer than “occasional use.” Honestly, just adding someone—even if it’s temporary—gives way more peace of mind, especially with winter driving around here. Not worth the gamble if you ask me.

I hear you on the “permissive use” thing—it’s just vague enough to make me uneasy. I’ve read through my policy a couple times, and it’s full of those little exceptions that make you wonder what would actually happen if someone else got in a fender bender. On the other hand, I get why some folks don’t want to bother adding someone for just a quick trip. Still, with how unpredictable Minnesota roads get in winter, I’d rather not risk it. Peace of mind is worth a little extra paperwork, if you ask me.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had the same worries—those “exceptions” in the policy always make me second-guess what’s actually covered. I let a buddy drive my car once during a snowstorm and spent the whole time stressing about what would happen if he slid into a ditch. Honestly, I’d rather deal with the hassle upfront than gamble with insurance fine print later. Minnesota winters aren’t exactly forgiving...

Honestly, I’d rather just add someone to my policy than deal with that “permissive use” gray area. Had a friend borrow my car for a Target run, and the whole time I was picturing some random fender bender and me having to explain it to insurance. Minnesota roads in winter are like an obstacle course anyway. Maybe it’s overkill, but I don’t trust fine print, especially when it’s my bank account on the line.
