Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Yeah, I’ve seen that “permissive use” thing trip people up more than once. Had a guy swear his buddy only borrowed the car for grocery runs, but after the third fender bender in six months, the insurer was like, “Uh, this is basically his car now.” Suddenly everyone’s scrambling. Honestly, it’s usually less hassle just to add them if they’re driving more than, say, once a week. The paperwork’s annoying, but not as annoying as fighting with claims after the fact... trust me.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve seen the “just add them” approach backfire too, especially if the person you’re adding has a spotty driving record. Sometimes folks don’t realize that adding someone with a couple tickets or an accident can spike your premium way more than you’d expect. It’s not always as simple as just filling out some paperwork and moving on.

Permissive use is definitely a gray area, though. Insurers aren’t thrilled when someone’s basically using your car like it’s their own, but if it really is just the occasional errand, most policies in MN will cover it—at least up to a point. The trouble starts when “occasional” turns into “regular,” and then yeah, claims get messy fast.

Honestly, I usually tell people to weigh the risk. If your friend’s driving once in a blue moon, permissive use might be fine. If it’s every weekend, you’re probably better off biting the bullet and adding them—just brace yourself for that possible rate hike. It’s never as straightforward as anyone wants it to be...

Yeah, this is exactly why I never add anyone unless I absolutely have to. My own record’s not great, and the last thing I need is someone else’s mess making it worse. Permissive use is risky, sure, but honestly, if it’s just a quick run to the store once in a while, I’ll take my chances. Insurance companies are already looking for reasons to jack up rates—no need to hand them another one.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but relying on permissive use feels like playing with fire. All it takes is one fender bender and suddenly you’re fighting with your insurer about coverage. I’d rather eat the higher premium than risk a denied claim, especially with kids in the car.

I tend to agree—permissive use always feels like a loophole insurers can wiggle out of if something goes sideways. I’ve got a coupe that’s not exactly cheap to fix, and honestly, the peace of mind from adding someone to the policy outweighs the extra cost for me. That said, I do wonder if insurers ever actually deny claims over this or if it’s just one of those urban legends... but I’m not willing to find out the hard way.
