How I managed to stack discounts for military student drivers

There’s always some weird clause buried in the fine print or they say “can’t combine with other offers.”

- Tell me about it. I’ve had places flat-out refuse to even explain why they can’t stack a military discount with a student one. Just get a canned “policy” answer.
- I’ve noticed some will budge if you push a bit, but most just hide behind their rules.
- Once had a guy at the counter act like I was trying to scam them by asking about two discounts. Like, calm down, it’s not a bank heist.

Honestly, I don’t get why a physical ID is so important. If they can verify the info, what’s the difference? Feels like they’re just making it harder on purpose.

Curious—has anyone ever actually gotten three discounts stacked at a dealership or rental? Or is that just a myth? I hear stories but never seen proof.

That’s hilarious—been there. I swear, some places treat you like you’re pulling off Ocean’s Eleven just for asking about a student AND military discount. I’ve never seen three stack in real life either, just heard rumors. Has anyone actually gotten a “manager override” or something for stacking more than two? Or is that just a unicorn?

I’ve actually managed to get three discounts stacked, but it took some serious luck and a manager who was in a good mood. This was at a car rental place near an airport—needed it for a cross-country road trip. I had my student ID, military ID, and AAA card. The person at the counter was skeptical, but when I asked if there was any way to combine them, she called the manager over.

He kind of laughed about it but said he’d “see what he could do.” After some typing and a lot of side-eye from the line behind me, he gave me the military rate, then applied the student discount on top. The AAA thing didn’t technically stack, but he threw in a free GPS rental as a “courtesy.” Not exactly three discounts off the total price, but close enough.

Honestly, I usually don’t push it because you never know when someone’s going to get weird about it or think you’re gaming the system. But if you catch the right person at the right time... sometimes they’ll bend the rules a little. Just have all your docs ready and don’t make a scene—that’s my motto.

That’s pretty much how it goes—depends on who you get at the counter and how much they care about the rules that day. I’ve tried stacking discounts before, but usually they just say “one per customer” and move on. I never thought to ask for a manager, honestly. Did you notice if it made a difference being at an airport location versus a regular city branch? I feel like airport spots are stricter, but maybe I’m wrong.

I’ve noticed the same thing—airport locations seem to stick to the book a lot more. Maybe it’s because they’re busier or have more oversight?

In my experience, city branches are a bit more flexible, especially if you catch them during a slow period. Did you ever try mentioning a competitor’s rate at either type of location? Sometimes that gets their attention, but I’m not sure if it works everywhere.
