Dashcams are definitely worth it from my experience, but there are some things to keep in mind:

- Video quality matters a lot. I had a cheaper one initially, and the footage was pretty much useless at night or in heavy rain. Upgraded to a mid-range model, and it's night-and-day difference (pun intended).
- Positioning also plays a role. Make sure it's mounted securely and angled properly to clearly capture license plates and road signs.
- Check your local regulations. Some places have rules about placement or recording audio, so better safe than sorry.
- Don't forget about storage. Loop recording is handy, but make sure your SD card is reliable. Had mine fail once right when I needed it most...lesson learned.

Like you mentioned, peace of mind is huge—especially if you've got family regularly riding with you. Knowing you've got clear evidence if something happens helps take a bit of stress off the daily drive.

True, but honestly, I've been using a budget dashcam for about two years now, and it's done the job just fine—even at night. Sure, it's not cinema-quality footage, but license plates are readable enough. I think sometimes we underestimate how decent cheaper tech can be these days...though I definitely agree about the SD card reliability. Learned that one the hard way myself.

That's the key right there—doesn't need to win any Oscars, just needs to show clearly who did what. I've handled plenty of claims where a budget dashcam was the difference between "he said, she said" and a quick resolution. That said, I've also seen some nighttime footage that's about as clear as grandma's glasses after cooking bacon...so maybe do a bit of research before grabbing the cheapest one on sale.

I've gotta agree on the nighttime footage thing. Had a cheap dashcam once, and the night recordings looked like Bigfoot sightings—grainy, blurry, and questionable at best. Spending just a little more can save you headaches later...lesson learned the hard way.

Yeah, I went super cheap on my first dashcam too, and the footage was pretty much useless after dark. Upgraded to a mid-range model—not fancy, but way clearer at night. Definitely worth the extra bucks for peace of mind.
