I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had a different experience with the military discount. We drive a couple of pretty standard family SUVs, nothing fancy, and the USAA rates have consistently beaten what I’ve found elsewhere—even with bundling. Maybe it’s just the type of car or our zip code, but for us, the military thing did make a noticeable dent. I do agree though, once you get into pricier cars, those discounts barely move the needle. For regular vehicles, it can still be worth it.

- Totally agree, the military discount actually made a difference for us too—at least with our older Outback and my partner’s CR-V.
- Noticed USAA was especially competitive when we kept coverage pretty basic. Once we added extras (like roadside or rental), the gap closed a bit.
- Location seems to matter a lot. When we moved states, our premium jumped even with the same cars.
- Higher-end vehicles? Yeah, the discount feels almost pointless there. But for standard stuff, it’s still one of the better deals I’ve found.
- Guess it’s one of those “your mileage may vary” situations... literally.

Yeah, you nailed it—location and coverage level really shift the numbers. I’ve seen folks get a great deal with just liability, but once you tack on comprehensive or extras, the savings shrink fast. Also, not every insurer applies the discount the same way. Sometimes it’s a flat rate, sometimes a percentage, and that can make a big difference depending on your base premium. If you’re driving something newer or pricier, it’s worth double-checking if the discount actually offsets the higher repair costs... sometimes it doesn’t. Always good to run the numbers before switching just for the military rate.

Yeah, that’s been my experience too—once you add comprehensive or collision, the “military discount” barely dents the premium, especially if you’ve got a couple tickets or an at-fault on your record. Has anyone actually seen a big drop after switching, even with a less-than-perfect driving history?

I’ve actually had a different experience. My driving record isn’t spotless (one fender bender a few years back), but when I switched to USAA, my rate dropped by about $30/month even after adding collision. Not earth-shattering, but it was more than I expected. Maybe it depends on the state or the car? I drive a ‘72 Chevelle, so maybe classic coverage plays into it too.
