That's actually a pretty solid strategy, especially the part about setting aside the difference. I've seen plenty of folks bump up their deductible without planning ahead, and then they're stuck scrambling when something happens. Curious though—have you checked if your insurer offers discounts for bundling policies? Sometimes combining home and auto can shave off a decent chunk, even in Michigan where rates are notoriously high...might be worth a quick call to your agent to find out.
