just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Good call on double-checking beforehand. Had a close call myself last winterβ€”rock flew up from a truck tire and chipped my windshield pretty badly. Luckily, I'd opted for the lower deductible on glass coverage. Usually I'm skeptical about adding extra coverage, but honestly, windshield protection is one of those things that's totally worth it. Glad your Mustang made it out okay... hailstorms can be brutal.

Definitely agree about windshield coverage being worth it. A few years back, I was driving my '67 Camaro home from a meet-up when a sudden hailstorm hit. Didn't see it coming at all... sky went from clear to nasty in minutes. Luckily, I'd just cleared out enough space in the garage beforehand (lesson learned from previous close calls), so I pulled in right as the hail started coming down hard. Ever since then, I've gotten into the habit of checking weather forecasts before any long drives or events. Can't always trust forecasts completely, but it's better than going in blind.

Honestly, classic cars can be especially vulnerableβ€”original parts aren't exactly easy or cheap to come by, and insurance can be tricky if you don't read the fine print carefully. Glad to hear your Mustang survived without damage; that's a relief for sure.

Windshield coverage is handy, sure, but isn't comprehensive coverage usually enough for hail damage? I mean, windshield-only seems kinda limited... wouldn't it make more sense to just double-check your full policy details instead? Curious if anyone's compared the costs lately.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Comprehensive usually covers hail, but the devil's in the details. A buddy of mine got caught out a couple years back because his deductible was way higher than he expected. He ended up paying a hefty chunk out-of-pocket even though technically he was "covered." So it's not just about having comprehensiveβ€”it's also about knowing exactly what your deductible and limits are.

Also makes me wonder if windshield-only coverage is aimed at people who live in areas with lots of gravel roads or frequent windshield chips from debris, rather than hail specifically. Seems like it'd be pretty limited otherwise. I mean, if you're already paying for comprehensive, does windshield-only even make sense?

Has anyone here actually done the math recently on windshield-only vs. comprehensive? Would be interesting to see if there's a significant savings or if it's just marketing fluff. And speaking of deductibles... does anyone know if insurers offer lower deductibles specifically for windshield replacement under comprehensive policies?

Comprehensive is usually enough, but like you said, deductibles can be a killer. Learned that the hard way myself after a nasty hailstormβ€”ended up paying almost as much as the windshield cost anyway. Honestly, windshield-only coverage seems like a waste unless you're constantly dealing with gravel or road debris. Even then, I'd rather just stash some cash aside for repairs instead of paying extra premiums every month.

I haven't crunched numbers lately, but last time I checked, windshield-only didn't save me enough to justify it. Maybe it's different now? Curious if anyone's found an insurer that offers a lower deductible specifically for glass under comprehensive...would definitely be interested in something like that.
