just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Yeah, covered parking can definitely help, but have you checked if you're actually getting a decent discount for raising your deductible? Sometimes the savings aren't as big as you'd think, especially if your driving record's already... colorful, like you mentioned. Have you asked your agent specifically what you'd save by bumping up the deductible? Agents aren't always secretive intentionallyβ€”sometimes they just assume you know the basics already, or they're juggling too many clients to remember to mention every discount. Also, have you looked into comp coverage specifically for hail and weather-related damage? Collision coverage won't usually help with hail damage, so raising that deductible might not affect your premiums as much as tweaking your comprehensive deductible. Might be worth double-checking exactly what you're paying for and what each change actually saves you. Just my two cents from dealing with this stuff daily... insurance can be weirdly complicated.

Definitely seconding the point about comprehensive coverageβ€”had a client once who assumed hail was covered under collision. Got a panicked call after a nasty storm, golf-ball-sized dents everywhere... and nope, collision didn't help at all. Turns out his comp deductible was set crazy high to save maybe twenty bucks a year. Moral of the story: always double-check exactly what's covered and how much you're actually saving by tweaking deductibles. Insurance math isn't always logical, trust me.

Learned this one the hard way myself... thought I was being clever bumping my deductible way up, then a tree branch decided to say hi to my windshield. Saved maybe $15 a year, ended up paying hundreds out of pocket. Insurance math is sneaky.

"Insurance math is sneaky."

Yeah, it definitely can feel that way sometimes. Had a client once who opted out of comprehensive coverage entirely to save a bit each month. Seemed fine until a freak hailstorm rolled through townβ€”his car looked like a golf ball afterward. Ended up costing him thousands out of pocket. It's always tempting to trim costs, but it's worth double-checking exactly what's covered before making those changes... hindsight's always 20/20, right?

Yeah, learned that lesson myself a few winters back. Thought I'd save a bit by skipping comprehensive, then slid on black ice into a curbβ€”bent axle, busted rim, the works.

"hindsight's always 20/20, right?"
Exactly... never again.
