just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Yeah, good call on checking the fine print. Couple summers back, we got caught in a crazy hailstorm near Denver—thought we were good, but turns out our deductible was way higher for hail specifically. Lesson learned the hard way... insurance can be sneaky sometimes.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm actually shopping around for my first insurance policy right now, and honestly, it's been a bit of a headache. Did you guys know that some policies specifically exclude hail damage altogether unless you pay extra? Like, isn't hail damage one of the main reasons people even get comprehensive coverage in certain areas?

I asked an agent about it yesterday, and he was pretty vague at first—had to push him a bit before he admitted that hail coverage wasn't automatically included. Makes me wonder how many people out there think they're covered when they're really not. And what's with these super high deductibles specifically for hail? Is it just because hailstorms are common enough that insurers don't want to pay out every time?

Also, does anyone know if there's a way to negotiate or lower these special deductibles? Or is it just something we're stuck with depending on where we live? Seems kinda unfair if you're in a place like Kansas or Colorado where hailstorms aren't exactly rare.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience—definitely gonna double-check all the fine print before signing anything. Better safe than sorry, I guess...

From what I've seen, negotiating hail deductibles directly is tough since they're usually set by the insurer based on your area's risk. But you might have luck shopping around—some companies offer lower hail deductibles as a selling point. I switched insurers last year after realizing my old policy had a crazy high deductible for hail... definitely worth comparing quotes carefully.

I've found that insurers rarely budge on hail deductibles once they're set, especially in high-risk areas. But one practical workaround I've used is adjusting other parts of my policy to offset the cost. For example, raising my collision deductible slightly lowered my overall premium, which helped balance out the higher hail deductible. It's not ideal, but it made sense for me since I drive carefully and rarely have collision claims.

Also, keep an eye out for discounts—some insurers offer reduced rates if you park your car in a garage or covered area regularly. When I moved apartments last year, I specifically chose a place with covered parking, and my insurer actually gave me a small discount for that. It wasn't huge, but every bit helps when you're budget-conscious like me.

Definitely worth asking your agent about these kinds of adjustments or discounts... sometimes they're not obvious unless you specifically inquire.

Wish I'd known this earlier... I learned the hard way after my last hailstorm fiasco. My car looked like a golf ball afterward, and I was stuck with a deductible that felt more like a ransom note than insurance coverage. 😂 Since I'm already paying high premiums (thanks to my "colorful" driving record), I didn't think there was much wiggle room. But turns out even a high-risk driver like me can shave off a couple bucks by tweaking things here and there.

I ended up raising my collision deductible too, figuring if I crash again it's probably time to reconsider public transportation anyway. And yeah, finding covered parking was a game changer. Not only did it help on insurance, but now I don't have to panic every time the sky turns gray. Definitely second your advice about asking agents directly—sometimes they're weirdly secretive about discounts unless you're super specific.
