just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Yeah, I hear you on the insurance headaches. I’ve had to fight tooth and nail just to get a fair payout after a tree branch took out my old Chevelle’s windshield. Still, I keep full coverage on my classics—just can’t risk it with how unpredictable the weather’s gotten. The mod fees are annoying, but losing a rare part to hail or a flood would be way worse. I’ll take the extra cost over rolling the dice any day. Parking under cover is a must for me too... learned that one the hard way.

Honestly, that’s the way to go, especially with classics. I’ve seen too many folks get burned thinking “it won’t happen to me,” then a freak hailstorm comes through and suddenly they’re out a rare hood ornament or worse. The mod fees sting, but yeah, losing something irreplaceable is way worse. I always tell people—if you love your car, treat it like you’d treat a pet in a thunderstorm: keep it covered and insured. Learned that one after my ‘72 Nova got pelted... still hurts to think about.

I get where you’re coming from, but sometimes the “extra cost” isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

True, but I’ve seen folks pay for coverage they didn’t actually need, or miss out on discounts because they didn’t shop around. Comprehensive coverage is a must for classics, no doubt, but it’s worth reviewing your policy every year—sometimes you can tweak things and save without sacrificing protection. Just my two cents from seeing both sides of it.

Had a similar scare last year—crazy windstorm, tree branch landed right next to my car. I’d always thought “comprehensive” was just extra, but after that, I double-checked my policy real quick. Sometimes you don’t realize what you’re missing till it’s almost too late.

Honestly, I used to think comprehensive was just a money grab too, but after a neighbor’s car got trashed by a falling sign during a storm, I changed my tune. Step one: read your policy. Step two: actually understand it. Don’t just skim—those “extras” aren’t always so extra when stuff hits the fan.
