just saw a story about a guy in Kansas whose car got totaled by hail, and turns out his insurance didn't cover it.

Yeah, that’s a tough pill to swallow. I’ve seen folks put thousands into keeping their cars running smooth, only to have the payout not even cover half of what they just spent. Had a case once where a guy had receipts for every little thing—new engine, suspension, even fancy headlights. Still, the check was based on market value, not what he’d invested. It’s frustrating, but the system just isn’t set up to reward maintenance. Sometimes I wish there was a “car enthusiast” clause or something... but then again, I’d probably be out of a job trying to keep track of everyone’s upgrades.

Tell me about it—my neighbor once spent a small fortune restoring his old Civic, right down to the custom seat stitching. When it got rear-ended, the insurance payout barely covered the cost of the new paint job, let alone everything else. It’s wild how all that TLC doesn’t translate to a higher check. Have any of you actually managed to get an insurer to recognize mods or maintenance in a payout, or is that just wishful thinking?

Honestly, it’s a tough spot—most standard policies just don’t factor in mods or all the extra care you put in unless you’ve got them specifically listed. But have you ever looked into agreed value or classic car coverage? I’ve seen folks get better results with those, since you can document upgrades and set a value up front. It’s not always cheap, but for a car you’ve poured your heart (and wallet) into, it might be worth it. Regular insurance just isn’t built for custom stuff, which is kinda frustrating, I know.

Man, insurance is such a headache sometimes. I get why people go for those agreed value or classic car things, but honestly, I barely scrape by with the regular coverage as it is. All those extra premiums for mods and upgrades? Feels like they’re just looking for more ways to empty my wallet. I mean, my car’s not exactly “classic” (unless you count being old and having a weird smell), but I’ve still put a bunch of time into keeping it running.

The hail thing freaks me out because we get random storms here too, and I never really thought about what would happen if my car got wrecked by weather. My policy just covers the basics—I’m not even sure if it’d pay out enough to replace my beater if something wild happened. The idea of documenting every little upgrade sounds like a nightmare, especially when most of mine are just cheap fixes or secondhand parts anyway.

I get that if you’ve got a show car or something really special, it makes sense to go all out with the insurance. But for broke students like me, it’s more about hoping nothing bad happens and maybe parking under a tree when the sky looks sketchy. Insurance companies always seem to find a way to wiggle out of paying up... unless you’re paying them extra every month.

I guess at the end of the day, you kinda have to pick your battles. Either shell out more for peace of mind or just cross your fingers and hope you don’t end up in some viral hailstorm disaster video.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. Insurance feels like a scam half the time, but man, I’d rather cough up a little extra than get totally screwed if a freak storm rolls through. My last car got dinged up by hail and the payout barely covered a set of tires, let alone repairs. Still, I hate how they nickel and dime you for every mod or upgrade. Half my “upgrades” are just duct tape and hope anyway. At this point, I just try to park under something solid and hope for the best.
