It’s funny you mention the defensive driving discounts—I’ve seen folks jump through hoops for those, only to get like $20 off a year. Not exactly life-changing. I do wonder if insurers are just assuming risk goes up with age, even if your record’s spotless. Has anyone actually seen a big drop in rates after taking one of those mature driver courses? Or is it mostly just a checkbox thing for the companies?

- Took one of those mature driver classes last year.
- My discount? About $18 per 6 months. Not a game-changer, but hey, every bit helps.
- Honestly, I think insurers mostly use it as a checkbox. They seem to care more about age brackets than your actual record or course completion.
- Still, I figure it can't hurt—plus, the refresher on new traffic laws was actually useful.
- Wouldn't expect a big drop in rates, though... just being realistic.

- Been driving over 40 years and yeah, the discounts for those classes barely make a dent.
- I did the course too—my rate dropped about $20 for the year. Not exactly life-changing, but I guess it’s something.
- What gets me is how they bump you into a new age bracket and suddenly your “risk” goes up, even if you’ve never had a claim or ticket.
- I will say, the class reminded me about some weird right-of-way changes in Kansas. Worth it for that alone, maybe.
- Still, feels like no matter what you do, the rates just creep up once you hit 65...

- Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been with the same company for decades, no claims, no tickets, and yet every renewal is a little higher.
- Tried shopping around last year—figured loyalty wasn’t paying off anymore. Ended up switching and saved maybe $10 a month, but it’s not exactly a windfall.
- Did the safe driver course too. My discount was about the same as others mentioned—barely covers a tank of gas these days.
- What really gets me is the “age bracket” thing. I’m driving less now than ever before, mostly errands and grandkid pickups, but apparently that makes me riskier? Doesn’t add up.
- Only upside: the class did remind me about those weird Kansas yield rules at certain intersections. Nearly avoided a fender bender because of it, so maybe it’s not all bad.

Feels like you just have to keep chipping away at it—bundle policies, raise deductibles, drop extras you don’t need...but yeah, it’s tough to get real savings once you’re past 65.

That’s wild to me. I’m just starting out and already paranoid about rates going up for stuff that’s out of my control. Makes me wonder if it’s even worth being “safe” if they’re gonna ding you anyway... Maybe I’ll just walk everywhere and save the headache.
