Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?
I get why people go for the higher deductible, but man... I just can’t bring myself to risk it with the family van. Kids are always dinging doors or someone’s bumping into us in parking lots. I’d rather pay a bit more each month and not stress about coughing up a grand if something happens. Maybe if I drove less or had a beater, I’d roll the dice, but for now, $500 feels like enough of a gamble.
Totally get where you’re coming from. I’m just shopping around for my first policy and the idea of a $1,000 deductible kinda freaks me out too. My luck, I’d save a few bucks and then immediately back into a pole at the grocery store... $500 feels safer, especially since I’m not exactly rolling in spare cash. Maybe when I’ve got more experience (and less anxiety), I’ll reconsider.
I get the hesitation - $1,000 feels like a lot when you’re just starting out. I remember my first policy; I went with the lower deductible too. It’s not just about the numbers, it’s about peace of mind, especially when you’re new to this. No shame in playing it safe until you get a better feel for things.
I totally get wanting that peace of mind, but I always run the numbers before deciding. If you rarely file claims and have a solid emergency fund, a higher deductible can make sense long-term. I switched after a couple years and saved a decent chunk - just had to be sure I could cover that out-of-pocket hit if something happened. It’s all about weighing your risk tolerance against your budget.
I hear you on the numbers game, but for me, peace of mind is worth a bit extra. After restoring my ‘68 Mustang, I just couldn’t stomach the thought of a big out-of-pocket bill if something happened. Have you ever had to actually use your higher deductible, or has it just been savings so far?
