On the flip side, if you never drive anyone but yourself and you’ve got a gold-plated health plan, maybe it’s not worth the extra cash.

That’s the part I keep circling back to. I’ve had a couple fender benders (okay, more than a couple), so my rates are already high. Med pay seems like an extra layer, but then again, my health insurance deductible is no joke. Curious if anyone’s had med pay actually *not* help, or if it ever overlaps weirdly with your main health plan? Sometimes I wonder if I’m just doubling up for no reason...

I’ve wondered about that overlap too, especially since my health insurance isn’t exactly cheap to use. Med pay feels like a safety net, but if your health plan already covers most accident stuff (minus the deductible), is it just paying twice? I guess it might come down to how high your deductible is and whether you’d rather pay a little more each month or risk a big bill after an accident. Has anyone actually had their med pay denied because their health insurance kicked in first? That’s the scenario I can’t quite wrap my head around...

I’ve actually had med pay and health insurance overlap after a fender bender, and it got confusing fast. Med pay kicked in first for the ER bill, then my health insurance covered the rest, minus my deductible. I never had med pay denied, but I did have to coordinate between the two, which was a hassle. If your deductible is high, med pay can help cover that gap, but if it’s low, it might not be worth the extra cost. It really depends on how much risk you’re comfortable with and how much you want to avoid surprise bills.
