Don’t let a pending injury claim run out a health-plan deadline

When accident-related medical bills are still being reviewed by the auto insurer, is it usually better to submit them to health insurance rather than wait for a liability decision? I’m concerned that waiting could run into a health-plan filing deadline, but I also don’t want to create a problem with later reimbursement or recovery.

I understand medical payments coverage or PIP may handle bills differently from a third-party liability claim, and the rules can depend on the policy and location. If health insurance pays first, what records should someone keep, and who’s the right place to ask about coordination and any repayment claim?

The distinction between a third-party liability claim and your own MedPay or PIP coverage matters here. A liability insurer generally pays as part of resolving the claim, rather than paying each medical bill as it arrives. MedPay or PIP may cover eligible expenses under its own policy terms while that claim is still pending.

So I wouldn’t assume that waiting on the liability decision means no auto coverage can pay sooner. Check which coverage is actually available, and ask the health plan how to handle the filing deadline and any reimbursement or recovery rights.
