I’ve actually had an officer accept my phone screen in Illinois, but I always keep a paper backup just in case tech fails me—like yours did. I wonder if anyone’s actually gotten a ticket for just having digital proof? Seems like there’s still a gray area.

Honestly, this is exactly why I’m paranoid about only having digital proof. I mean,

“I always keep a paper backup just in case tech fails me—like yours did.”
—same! My phone’s battery has betrayed me more times than I can count, and I just picture myself explaining that to an officer while frantically waving a dead iPhone. Has anyone ever had an officer *not* accept the digital version, even if it technically counts? I feel like the rules are there, but maybe not every cop’s on the same page...

I’ve actually had an officer give me the side-eye when I pulled up my insurance on my phone, even though it’s supposed to be fine here. He eventually accepted it, but I could tell he wasn’t thrilled. Ever since, I keep a crumpled paper copy in my glove box—just in case my phone decides to take a nap at the worst possible moment. Tech is great… until it isn’t.

I’ve run into the same thing—one officer was cool with the phone, another acted like I handed him a napkin. Here’s what I do now: I keep a printed copy in the glove box, another in my wallet, and the digital version on my phone. Overkill? Maybe, but after a dead battery fiasco a few winters ago, I’m not taking chances. Paper might be old-school, but it never needs charging…

Honestly, I tell clients the same thing—digital is legal in Illinois, but not every cop seems up to speed. I’ve seen too many folks get flustered when their phone’s dead or the app won’t load. Paper backup’s not overkill, just practical.
