"my premiums shot up noticeably when I switched from a modest sedan to an older sports coupe"
Yeah, that's pretty common actually. Insurers typically categorize sports coupes as higher risk, even if they're older models—mainly because they're statistically more likely to be involved in accidents or attract theft. If you're curious about consistency, you might try comparing quotes from a few different companies. Sometimes insurers weigh vehicle types differently, so shopping around can really help pinpoint who's offering the best deal for your specific car and situation. Hope that clears things up a bit...

Yeah, I was pretty skeptical about this at first too, but apparently it's legit. When I asked my agent about it, he said insurers look closely at accident stats and theft rates, and sports coupes—even older ones—tend to rank higher in both. You might wanna double-check your coverage options though...sometimes tweaking your deductibles or coverage limits can ease the sting a bit. Worth a shot anyway.
Yeah, insurers definitely don't play around with sports coupes. Learned that the hard way myself. A few years back, I got all excited about buying a used Mustang GT—thought I was getting a sweet deal until I called my insurance company. They quoted me a price that nearly made me choke on my coffee. And this was for an older model too, nothing fancy or brand new.
I asked them straight up why it was so high, and they pretty much echoed what your agent said: higher accident rates, theft risk, and apparently they think we're all secretly street racers or something (I mean... they're not entirely wrong in my case, but still).
Funny thing though—I switched to an older sedan later on (boring, I know), and my rates dropped significantly. But then I got a speeding ticket or two—or three—and suddenly I'm "high-risk" again no matter what I drive. Go figure.
Anyway, have you guys noticed if certain colors affect your premiums too? Heard from a buddy once that red cars get higher rates because they're supposedly more likely to get pulled over. Thought it was just an urban myth, but now I'm curious if there's any truth to it...

Pretty sure that's just an old myth. I've had a bright red sedan for years and my insurance never budged based on color alone. It's mostly about make, model, driving history, and location. But speaking of Mustangs... yeah, insurers definitely have trust issues there. Had a friend with a Camaro who faced the same sticker shock—guess sports coupes are guilty until proven innocent!
Had a similar experience when I bought my black BMW. Everyone kept saying I'd pay more just because it's a luxury brand and supposedly gets targeted by cops more often. Turns out, color didn't even factor into my premium—insurance cared way more about horsepower, how many miles I drive yearly, and accident history. Seems like insurers are less interested in flashy colors and more concerned about what's under the hood...
