Confused about Illinois car insurance rules—anyone else?

I always wonder if cops actually get annoyed when you’re digging around for your phone and the app just refuses to load. Like, does anyone else get paranoid about looking “suspicious” just because your tech isn’t cooperating? I keep a crumpled paper copy in my glove box now, just in case. Not the prettiest, but at least I’m not stuck praying my phone doesn’t die at the worst moment. Anyone ever actually had an officer ask for both paper and digital, or is one usually fine?

Honestly, I do the same thing. I’ve had my phone freeze up right as I was trying to pull up my insurance once—felt like it took an hour, even though it was probably 30 seconds. Never had a cop ask for both, though. Usually, they just want to see something that proves you’re covered. Paper might look rough, but it’s reliable. Tech is great until it isn’t... especially in an old car where nothing ever charges right anyway.

Honestly, paper copies might be old school, but they’ve saved me from a headache more than once. My instructor always says to keep both—a printed one in the glove box and a digital one on your phone, just in case. If your car’s charger is finicky, it’s not worth risking it. The last thing you want is to be fumbling with a dead phone when you’re already nervous. Paper gets crumpled, but it always works.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve been through a couple of roadside stops over the years, and once my phone just wouldn’t load the insurance PDF—no signal, of course, right when I needed it. Luckily I had the paper tucked in with my registration. It’s not the prettiest after a few months, but it’s always there. I do keep a photo on my phone too, but honestly, tech fails at the worst times. Paper might be “old school,” but it’s saved me more than once. Guess it’s one of those things that seems silly until you really need it.

I get the appeal of keeping paper copies, but honestly, I’m trying to cut down on clutter in my glove box. I’ve just got the digital version saved offline on my phone. Haven’t had an issue yet, but maybe I’m tempting fate...
