But sometimes I do wonder if there’s such a thing as being too cautious. Like, do we really need all those add-ons? Or is it just insurance companies playing on our fears?

Honestly, I think a lot of it is just upselling. I’m buying my first policy now and the agent kept rattling off extras—glass coverage, roadside, rental, gap, you name it. I get wanting peace of mind, but at some point it feels like paying for stuff I’ll never use. My dad’s car got totaled once and he didn’t have half those add-ons, but his basic coverage still took care of the big stuff. I’m just sticking with what’s required and maybe one or two things that actually make sense for me. The rest feels like overkill.

Totally get that, but I’ve been burned before. Had basic coverage, then a rock nailed my windshield—guess what, no glass coverage, so that was all me. Not saying you need everything, but sometimes the “extras” aren’t as useless as they sound. Just gotta figure out what’s actually worth it for how you drive.

I hear you on the “extras” sometimes coming in handy. I drive a ton for work, so I keep wondering if I’m tempting fate by skipping stuff like rental coverage or roadside. Anybody here actually had to use those, or are they mostly just a waste?

Honestly, I used to skip roadside too, but after one late-night flat tire in the middle of nowhere, I was glad I had it. It’s one of those things you hope you never need, but when you do, it’s a lifesaver. Rental coverage, though—I’ve never actually used mine, but it’s not super expensive for the peace of mind. If you’re on the road a lot, it might be worth it just for the “what if” factor.

- I get where you're coming from—insurance add-ons feel like a money pit sometimes.
- Roadside is one of those things that seems pointless until you’re stranded with a dead battery or a busted belt. I’ve had both, and trust me, the tow truck guy was worth every penny.
- Rental coverage, though, I’m a bit more on the fence about. If you’ve got a backup car (or can bum a ride), it’s not always essential. But if you rely on your car daily, it could save a lot of hassle.
- Illinois insurance laws are already confusing enough, and they don’t require either of these extras. It really comes down to your risk tolerance and how much you drive.
- For what it’s worth, I’ve never regretted having roadside, but I’ve dropped rental coverage a couple times when money was tight. Haven’t missed it yet... knock on wood.
- At the end of the day, you’re not alone in wondering if you’re tempting fate. Sometimes you just have to weigh the “what if” against the monthly cost and hope for the best.
