"Did your friend shop around for insurance afterward?"

Good pointβ€”shopping around can help. My buddy had a similar issue after a speeding ticket; switching insurers didn't magically fix things, but it definitely softened the blow a bit. Worth checking out, anyway...

Switching insurers can definitely help cushion the blow, but realistically, a DUI in Idaho is gonna sting no matter who you're with. Insurers typically classify DUIs as high-risk events, and your premiums could easily double or even triple, depending on your driving history and current insurer. Still, shopping around might uncover companies with more forgiving underwriting guidelinesβ€”it's tedious, sure, but I've seen it save folks hundreds annually. Worth the effort, imo.

This is pretty helpful, thanks. I'm actually just about to buy my first insurance policy, and hearing about how steep the rates jump after a DUI makes me even more cautious about keeping a clean record. Honestly, I didn't realize exactly how severe the penalties wereβ€”doubling or tripling sounds brutal. I wonder if anyone knows how long a DUI stays on your insurance record in Idaho? Like, is it a permanent thing or does it eventually drop off after a certain number of years...? Seems like it'd be good to know exactly how long you'd be paying for one mistake.

Pretty sure in Idaho it's around 5 years that a DUI affects your insurance rates, but I've heard some insurers might look back even longer... Honestly, that's reason enough for me to stay extra cautiousβ€”one slip-up can haunt your wallet for years.

Actually, insurers often look back further than the state's official timeframe. Idaho might say 5 years, but I've seen companies factor in DUIs from 7 or even 10 years ago. Definitely not something to underestimate...
