how bad would insurance spike after a DUI in Idaho?

Insurance spikes after a DUI can be pretty brutal, but defensive driving courses do help soften the blow a bit. I took one years ago (no DUI, just a speeding ticket... or two), and it actually knocked a decent chunk off my premium. Plus, I learned how to parallel park without embarrassing myself - bonus points! Did your friends mention if their insurers were picky about which courses qualified for discounts? Seems like every company has its own quirky rules.

I agree, defensive driving courses really can make a noticeable difference. When I bought my first policy recently, my agent mentioned that insurers often prefer state-approved courses. Probably best to check directly with your provider before signing up... saves any hassle later.

Yeah, good point about checking with your insurer first - I've seen people jump into courses only to find out later they weren't approved. As for the DUI impact in Idaho, unfortunately, it's usually pretty steep. I've noticed premiums can easily double or even triple depending on your provider and driving history. But taking a state-approved defensive driving course afterward can sometimes soften the blow a bit... definitely worth looking into.

True, but I'd still be cautious. A friend of mine took one of those courses thinking it'd help significantly, and while it did shave off a bit, his premium was still painfully high for years afterward. Better than nothing, though...

Yeah, those courses can help a bit, but don't expect miracles. Did your friend shop around for insurance afterward? I've found that comparing quotes can sometimes ease the sting...at least a little.
