Why did my GEICO premium jump so much this year?

Honestly, these apps are a mixed bag. I get the frustration—they ding you for stuff that’s just normal driving sometimes. But, weirdly enough, I tried one last year when my rates shot up and it actually helped. I was pretty skeptical, but after a few months of careful driving (and, yeah, a couple of “hard brakes” thanks to wildlife), my premium dropped a bit. Not a miracle fix, but better than nothing.

I still keep an old atlas in the glovebox, though. There’s something about getting off the main drag and onto those backroads that makes all the tech feel less suffocating. Less data tracking, more scenery. But then again, if you’re in the city or stuck in rush hour, those apps are basically just waiting for you to mess up.

Insurance companies are definitely squeezing people lately, but sometimes the tech can work in your favor—if you’re willing to play their game. Not ideal, but maybe worth a shot before going totally analog.

Honestly, I hear this kind of thing all the time—people surprised by their premiums jumping, even when they haven’t had any tickets or accidents. The telematics apps can be a double-edged sword, for sure. I’ve seen cases where someone’s rates went up after using one just because they commuted during rush hour and the app flagged “frequent braking” or “late-night driving.” It’s not always fair, but that’s how the algorithms seem to work.

Personally, I tested one of those programs when my company rolled it out internally. Figured I’d see what all the fuss was about. I drive pretty conservatively, but even then, the app dinged me for “hard acceleration” merging onto the highway—which, honestly, is just normal traffic flow around here. After six months, my discount was barely noticeable. Not exactly worth the hassle in my case.

But you’re right about insurance companies tightening things up lately. The industry’s facing a lot of increased costs—repair bills are through the roof, and claim payouts have gone up across the board. That gets passed along to everyone, unfortunately. Even folks with spotless records aren’t immune.

I get wanting to unplug from all the data tracking. There’s something satisfying about using an old-school map and just driving without worrying about every move being analyzed. But if you’re looking for ways to shave a few bucks off your premium, sometimes these apps are all that’s left... unless you want to start raising deductibles or dropping coverage.

It’s not ideal, but it’s probably better than nothing if you’re already paying more than last year. Just don’t expect miracles—and keep that atlas handy for sanity’s sake.
