What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Yeah, this is what’s making me nervous about just sticking with the minimum. It sounds fine until you realize that if you actually hit someone and they get hurt, you’re basically on your own for anything over those limits. I keep seeing people say “they just send letters,” but what if the other driver is really aggressive about it? Or their lawyer is? I’ve heard stories where they got a judgment and then it followed them for years. I mean, wage garnishment isn’t just a slap on the wrist.

I get that most claims aren’t huge, but it only takes one. Am I missing something, or is it just a gamble? Feels like one bad day and you could be stuck paying for a decade. Maybe the minimum is just for people with nothing to lose... or am I overthinking it?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. I’ve had the same worries—like, if something goes really wrong, is saving a few bucks on premiums even worth it? I’ve read stories about folks getting hit with huge bills and it just snowballs. It’s a tough call, especially if you’re watching your budget, but sometimes it feels like the minimum is just rolling the dice. I don’t think you’re overthinking it at all. One accident can change everything, even if it’s rare.

Man, this is exactly why car insurance feels like a weird game of “How much do you trust your luck?” I’ve been that person squinting at the policy breakdown, thinking, “Is this extra coverage just a money pit, or am I gonna regret not having it when some guy in a lifted truck backs into me at Publix?”

Here’s the thing about Florida’s minimums: they’re honestly not much. You basically get Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL), but neither covers your own car if you’re at fault. And if you cause a big accident? The minimums can run out real fast. Like, “blink and now you owe someone $20k” fast. I’ve seen it happen to a buddy—he rear-ended someone, their car was totaled, and his insurance barely made a dent. He ended up paying monthly on the difference for years. Not fun.

I totally get wanting to save money, especially with how everything’s getting pricier (don’t even get me started on groceries). But I always ask myself: if I had to pay out of pocket for someone else’s fancy SUV or medical bills, could I swing it? For me, the answer is a hard nope. That’s why I upped my coverage a bit. It stings every month, but it helps me sleep better knowing one dumb mistake won’t wipe out my savings.

Is it overkill? Maybe. But then again, Florida drivers are... let’s just say “creative.” Between the rain and the snowbirds, accidents aren’t exactly rare. I’d rather grumble about my premium than panic about bankruptcy.

Curious if anyone’s actually had the minimum and come out okay after an accident? Or is it always a “learned the hard way” situation?

Had the same debate with myself last year.

“Is this extra coverage just a money pit, or am I gonna regret not having it when some guy in a lifted truck backs into me at Publix?”
I get it, but honestly, how many folks here have actually had to cough up thousands after an accident because they only had the minimum? Is it just rare horror stories, or is this happening all the time? I keep hearing about people losing their shirts, but is that just insurance scare tactics or real talk?

I’ve seen both sides of it, honestly. My buddy stuck with the minimum and got rear-ended—his car was toast and the other driver’s insurance barely covered a rental, let alone repairs. He ended up out a couple grand. It’s not every day, but it’s not just scare tactics either... especially in Florida where people drive like they’re auditioning for a Fast & Furious reboot.
