What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—those monthly premiums can feel like a second car payment sometimes. But here’s the thing: I’ve seen folks come in after a fender bender thinking, “Hey, I’ve got PIP, I’m good,” and then get hit with bills that make their eyes bug out. PIP’s like a band-aid on a broken leg if you end up in the hospital for more than a day or two.

Uninsured motorist coverage is one of those things you don’t think about until you really, really wish you had it. I mean, Florida’s got more uninsured drivers than love bugs in May. Not saying you gotta go full gold-plated policy, but sometimes bumping up coverage by just a little can save you from some serious headaches (and wallet-aches) down the road. But yeah, I get it—sometimes the budget just won’t stretch. Just don’t be surprised if your future self gives you some side-eye if you ever get rear-ended by someone with nothing but a prayer and expired tags...

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this a lot since I started driving. My dad keeps telling me the same thing—bare minimum is just enough to keep you legal, but not enough to actually protect you if something goes sideways. Honestly, I kinda rolled my eyes at first because it feels like every insurance add-on is just another way to drain my bank account. But then my friend got rear-ended by some dude with no insurance and she’s still fighting with her own company over medical bills months later. It’s wild.

I get wanting to save money, but Florida drivers are... let’s just say “creative” with their coverage (or lack of it). If you’re only carrying PIP and property damage, you’re basically betting nothing bad will happen. That’s not a bet I’d take after seeing how many people treat stop signs like suggestions around here. Not saying everyone needs the Cadillac plan, but a little extra might be worth it when you think about all the random stuff that can go wrong on these roads.

I hear you on the “just enough to keep you legal” mindset. When I first moved to Florida, I figured the minimum would be fine since I’m a pretty careful driver. Then my neighbor got T-boned by someone with no insurance, and her out-of-pocket costs were way higher than she expected—even after her PIP kicked in. It made me rethink things. The odds don’t seem great when so many folks are underinsured or just plain reckless. For me, spending a bit more for uninsured motorist coverage felt like a pretty reasonable trade-off for peace of mind.

- Totally get where you’re coming from.
- Florida’s minimums are really just that—bare bones.
- I’ve seen a few classics get rear-ended at shows, and the owners were left footing big bills because the other guy had nothing.
- Uninsured motorist coverage isn’t flashy, but it’s saved my ‘72 Chevy more than once.
- Peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks, especially with so many folks driving uninsured down here...

- That’s spot on about Florida’s minimums—they really don’t go far if something serious happens.
- One thing folks overlook: property damage limits here are just $10k, which barely covers a fender bender with a newer car, let alone a classic.
- I’ve seen claims where someone thought they were “fully covered,” but after a pile-up, they were left paying out of pocket for the other driver’s injuries or repairs.
- Uninsured motorist is underrated, honestly. With so many drivers skipping insurance or carrying the bare minimum, it’s almost a necessity if you want to protect yourself and your ride.
- Not saying everyone needs gold-plated coverage, but those few extra bucks can save a ton of headaches down the line...
