What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

I ended up paying out of pocket for a bunch of it, which sort of defeated the whole point of having insurance in the first place.

Man, I’ve been there. It’s like, you think you’re being smart by saving on premiums, but then one fender bender and suddenly your wallet’s on a crash diet. I used to joke that my “minimum coverage” was basically just a sticker that said “good luck.”

Here’s my step-by-step guide to surviving Florida insurance headaches:

1. Accept that the bare minimum is really just for legal peace of mind, not actual peace of mind.
2. If you drive a lot (especially in South Florida rain), bumping up coverage is like buying an umbrella that actually works instead of one from the dollar store.
3. Don’t assume more coverage is always crazy expensive—like you said, sometimes it’s just a couple lattes a month.
4. When you do need it, decent coverage can save your bacon (and your bank account). My cousin’s insurance came through after a flood, but only because he had comprehensive. Otherwise, he’d still be drying out his seats.

You’re not paranoid—just practical. Florida drivers are wild and the weather’s wilder. Sometimes paying a bit more now saves you from a financial monsoon later.

It’s wild how many people think the minimum is enough until they actually need it. I see claims all the time where folks are shocked at what isn’t covered—especially when it comes to property damage or injuries that go beyond those low limits. The state minimums in Florida don’t even include bodily injury liability, which blows my mind considering how expensive medical bills can get after a crash.

I get wanting to save money, but sometimes it feels like playing roulette with your finances. Curious if anyone here has ever had to deal with an uninsured or underinsured driver? That’s another headache altogether, and it’s more common than people realize. I’ve seen cases where someone thought they were covered, only to find out the other driver had nothing and their own policy didn’t help much either. Makes you wonder if the “bare minimum” is really worth the risk, especially with how unpredictable things can get on Florida roads.

- Totally hear you on the “roulette” feeling. I used to think the minimum was enough, too—until my neighbor got rear-ended by someone with no insurance at all. She had to pay out of pocket for stuff her policy didn’t cover, and it was a mess for months. That really made me rethink things.

- The fact that Florida doesn’t require bodily injury liability just seems backwards. Medical bills are no joke, and even a minor accident can spiral into thousands. I get wanting to save cash, but sometimes it’s like stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.

- Uninsured/underinsured drivers are everywhere down here. My cousin got sideswiped last year, and the other guy had nothing. Her own policy barely helped because she’d gone with the lowest limits. She ended up borrowing money just to fix her car and cover some medical stuff. Not fun.

- I do get why people go for the minimum, though. Insurance is expensive, especially if you’ve got a family or tight budget. But after seeing what can happen, I’d rather cut corners somewhere else than risk getting stuck with bills I can’t handle.

- Honestly, it’s a gamble either way. You hope you’ll never need more coverage... but if you do, you’ll wish you had it. I’m still not sure where the sweet spot is, but “bare minimum” feels like tempting fate on these roads.

You’re not alone in thinking it’s risky. It’s one of those things you don’t appreciate until something goes sideways.

Yeah, the minimum in Florida is basically just PIP and property damage—no bodily injury liability, which blows my mind. If you cause a bad accident, you’re on the hook for medical bills out of pocket. Seen folks lose savings or get sued over this. Not worth the risk, honestly.

- Been there, almost. Years ago, someone rear-ended my S-Class and only had the minimum. Their insurance barely covered my bumper, let alone any injuries.
- I always carry way more than the minimum now. With the cars I drive, it’s just not worth the gamble.
- Honestly, even if you don’t have a luxury car, medical bills add up fast. One ER visit and you’re looking at thousands.
- The peace of mind is worth the extra premium, at least for me.
