What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

I get where you’re coming from, but I think for some folks—like if you’re driving an older, lower-value car and don’t have a ton of assets—the minimum can actually make sense. Not ideal, but sometimes the budget just won’t stretch. I’ve gone bare bones before when money was tight and just made peace with the risk... not fun, but doable if you’re realistic about what you’d lose. Florida’s system isn’t great, but for people in that spot, it’s sometimes the only option.

Yeah, I get that—sometimes you just have to do what you can afford. I drove a 15-year-old Corolla for ages and only carried the minimum because, honestly, it wasn’t worth much and my savings were basically nonexistent. Still, I always worried about what would happen if I hit someone and their medical bills went through the roof. Florida’s no-fault thing helps a bit, but if you’re at fault and the other person sues, it can get ugly fast. It’s a gamble, for sure.

- Honestly, I get the logic behind carrying just the minimum, especially if your car isn’t worth much.
- I’ve always wondered, though—if you’re driving something expensive, does it even make sense to risk it?
- I pay for extra coverage mostly out of paranoia... but sometimes I wonder if the insurance companies are just playing on our fears.
- Has anyone actually had to pay out of pocket after an accident because their policy was too basic? That’s the part that freaks me out.

- Been there, done that—carrying just the minimum in Florida is a gamble, especially if you’ve got tickets or accidents on your record (like me).
- The state only requires PIP and property damage liability. That means if you total someone’s fancy car or injure them badly, you’re on the hook for anything above your policy limits.
- Had a buddy who rear-ended a BMW. His insurance covered $10k, but the repairs were $18k. He had to cough up the rest himself. Not fun.
- If your own car gets wrecked and you don’t have collision, you’re out of luck. Doesn’t matter if it’s a beater or a Tesla—no coverage, no payout.
- I get why people want to save money, but honestly, the peace of mind from extra coverage is worth it for me. The risk just isn’t worth it, especially with how litigious things can get here.
- Insurance companies definitely play on fear sometimes, but after seeing what happens when coverage runs out, I’d rather be paranoid than broke.

- Just got my first car and trying to figure all this out...honestly, the bare minimum sounded tempting until I started reading stuff like this.

- That kind of freaks me out. I mean, my car isn’t worth a ton, but I’d still be screwed if it got totaled.
- I get wanting to save money—insurance is expensive, especially for someone with zero experience driving in Florida. But hearing about people having to pay out of pocket for stuff that’s way more than their policy covers...not sure it’s worth the stress.
- Still, sometimes I wonder if insurance companies hype up the risk just to get us to buy more coverage. Anyone else feel like there’s a middle ground? Like, not the absolute minimum, but not full-blown everything either?
- Anyway, this thread’s making me rethink just going with the cheapest option. Maybe better safe than sorry...
