I’ve always been curious about that too. Like, are insurance folks really digging through your car for DoorDash stickers, or is it more if you get into an accident and they find out you were delivering? Seems like a lot of people just don’t mention it unless they absolutely have to. I feel like it’s such a gray area. Has anyone actually had their rates go up just for having a takeout bag or something in the backseat?

I’ve wondered about this too. From what I’ve seen, insurance companies don’t really care about a random takeout bag or even a DoorDash sticker unless you’re actually in an accident and they have a reason to dig deeper. My cousin drove for Uber Eats for a bit and never mentioned it to his insurer—no issues until he got rear-ended, then suddenly it was a big deal. They asked a ton of questions and his claim got messy. I get why people keep quiet, but honestly, it feels risky. I’d rather pay a little more than risk getting denied if something happens.

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s wild how insurance companies suddenly become Sherlock Holmes when there’s an accident. I’ve thought about just “forgetting” to mention my side hustle, but honestly, my luck is so bad I’d probably get caught the first week. Paying a bit more sucks, but having them deny a claim would be way worse. Delaware insurance is already confusing enough without adding secret missions into the mix.

That’s the thing—people always think they’ll just “slide under the radar,” but I’ve seen it bite folks way too many times. I had a client a couple years back who drove for one of those delivery apps on the side. He figured, “Eh, it’s just a few hours a week, what are the odds?” Well, sure enough, he got rear-ended while dropping off a pizza. The insurance company dug into his phone records and GPS, and suddenly he’s getting grilled about whether he was “using the vehicle for business purposes.” Claim denied. It was a mess.

I get why people are tempted to leave out details. Delaware’s rules aren’t exactly straightforward—sometimes it feels like you need a decoder ring just to figure out what’s covered and what isn’t. But I’m curious: has anyone here actually tried shopping around for policies that are up front about covering side gigs? I’ve heard some companies are starting to offer “gig economy” add-ons, but I haven’t seen many people actually use them. Are they worth it, or is it just another way to squeeze more money out of us?

And does anyone else feel like the rates here jumped overnight? I swear, last year my renewal was almost $300 higher with zero accidents or tickets. I keep wondering if there’s some secret Delaware discount I’m missing, or if it’s just the price of living near the beach...

- Been there with the rate hikes—mine jumped $250 last year, no changes on my end either.
- Looked into those gig add-ons, but honestly, they felt overpriced for what you get.
- Some smaller insurers actually had better deals for side gigs than the big names, but you have to dig.
- I always ask about “usage-based” discounts or classic car policies (if you’ve got an older ride that’s not your daily). Sometimes you can stack a few small discounts and it adds up.
- Delaware’s rates are just weirdly high lately...maybe more claims from all the summer traffic?
