One time, they tried to argue that “overnight” meant literally sunset to sunrise... as if I’m checking my watch every time I park.

That’s a classic—definitions can get weirdly specific. I always tell folks to double-check how “primary garaging address” is defined in their policy, and if you regularly park somewhere else, get it in writing. Out of curiosity, have you ever tried adding a second address or using a collector car policy? Some of those are more flexible, but they come with their own quirks.

I’ve run into that “overnight” argument before—felt like they were just looking for a reason to deny a claim. I actually tried adding my girlfriend’s place as a second address since I crash there a lot, but the paperwork was a nightmare and they still gave me grief. Collector car policies sound great on paper, but some of them are super strict about mileage or where you can drive. Honestly, it’s almost like they want you to mess up so they can wiggle out of paying. Just my two cents...

Man, I feel you on the paperwork circus. I tried explaining to my agent that my “garage” is technically my parents’ carport and got the same runaround. It’s like they expect us to keep the car in a museum or something. Just gotta laugh sometimes...

Yeah, insurance folks really want that “locked garage” answer, but honestly, who has that kind of setup? I ended up just being super upfront—sent photos of the carport and explained it’s the only option. They raised my premium a bit, but at least it’s covered. If you’re on a budget, maybe try shopping around for companies that don’t get so picky about storage. Some are more chill if you’re not driving it daily.

Locked garages are the insurance holy grail, but yeah, not everyone’s got one. Carports are honestly pretty common, and as long as you’re upfront, most companies will work with you—though, yeah, sometimes the premium creeps up. Some carriers are stricter than others, especially with vintage cars. If you’re not driving it much, definitely mention that—low mileage can help offset the storage thing a bit. It’s all about balancing risk for them, but there’s usually some wiggle room if you ask.
