“but sometimes it feels like you’re being punished for actually enjoying the car.”
That’s exactly how I feel. I get the logic behind the cap, but it does seem a bit backwards when you’re paying to own and maintain something special. Have you ever tried negotiating a higher limit, or maybe switching providers? I’ve heard some companies are more flexible, but I’m not sure if that’s just marketing talk.
I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not totally convinced the cap is all bad. It does keep premiums lower, and honestly, it’s probably what lets some of us afford to keep these cars on the road at all. I did look into bumping up my mileage once—turns out the premium hike was pretty steep. Maybe it’s a tradeoff? I’d rather have some driving than none, even if it feels a bit restrictive at times...
I hear you on the tradeoff, but I’ve seen more than a few folks get caught out by the cap—usually right after a sunny weekend and a couple of “just one more lap” detours. Next thing you know, they’re sweating bullets at renewal time, wondering if they need to start walking everywhere or just fudge the odometer (not that I’d ever recommend that...).
The lower premiums are nice, no doubt. But sometimes I wonder if it’s worth the stress of constantly doing math in my head every time I want to take the long way home. Had a client once who got so paranoid about going over his limit, he actually mapped out every drive in advance—took half the fun out of owning the car. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather pay a bit more and not have to treat my speedometer like a countdown clock.
Still, I get why people stick with it. If you’re only driving to shows or Sunday brunch, it probably makes sense. But for those of us who like to sneak out for an impromptu cruise now and then... well, let’s just say I’ve seen some creative “route planning.”
Honestly, I’ve been there—first year I had the mileage cap, I tracked every single drive in my phone. Got pretty exhausting, and I started skipping random drives just to “save miles” for special trips. The savings were nice, but it started to feel like rationing dessert. Now I just pay a bit more for a higher cap. Less stress, more actual driving. If you’re on a tight budget, though, I get why folks stick with the cheaper option... just wish it didn’t take the spontaneity out of it.
I’m just looking into this stuff for the first time, and honestly, the mileage cap sounds kind of restrictive. I get the savings, but I’d hate to feel like I have to plan every drive. Maybe worth it if you barely use the car, but I’m not sure it’s for me.
