Classic Car Insurance and the Annual Mileage Cap—Worth It?

That’s interesting, because I’ve always been a little paranoid about the mileage cap thing. I mean, I get why it’s there, but it feels like one more thing to keep track of, you know? I started jotting down odometer readings at the start of each month (nerdy, I know), and it turns out we barely drive our “fun” car at all. Like, maybe a couple hundred miles a year if we’re lucky. Most of the time it’s just sitting in the garage looking pretty and collecting dust.

I used to think we’d be out cruising every weekend, but between kids’ activities, weather, and just...life, it’s rare. The only time I got close to the cap was when my cousin got married three states away and we decided to make a road trip out of it. Even then, I was still under by a few hundred miles.

One thing that bugs me is how strict some insurers are about the cap. Mine’s been chill so far, but I’ve heard stories about people getting hassled for going over by like 50 miles. Seems a bit much? On the flip side, the rates are way better than regular insurance, so I guess it balances out.

Honestly, unless you’re using your classic as a daily (which...props if you are), it’s tough to hit those limits. Sometimes I wonder if I’m paying for coverage I don’t really need since the car barely leaves the driveway. But then again, peace of mind is worth something too.

Anyone else ever feel guilty for not driving their classic enough? Or is that just me overthinking things again...

Honestly, same here. I always imagine taking my old Mustang out all summer, but then school, work, and random stuff get in the way. The mileage cap never really bothers me since I barely drive it, but I do sometimes wonder if it’s silly to pay for insurance on a car that mostly just sits there. Still, knowing it’s protected if something weird happens is kind of comforting… even if it means I’m basically insuring a very expensive paperweight half the year.

That’s pretty much how I justify it too. I’ve had my GTO for years, and while it spends most of its life under a cover, I’d hate myself if something happened and I wasn’t covered. Classic car insurance is usually cheaper than regular policies anyway, especially with the mileage cap. Plus, some policies cover things like theft or damage in storage, which gives me peace of mind. It does feel a bit silly sometimes, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I get what you mean about insuring a “very expensive paperweight.” My ‘72 Chevelle barely sees daylight except for a few road trips in the summer, but I’d be kicking myself if something happened in storage and I wasn’t covered. The mileage cap can be a pain, though—I’ve had to plan my routes pretty carefully to avoid going over. Still, the lower premiums make it worth it for me. I’d rather have that peace of mind than risk it, even if it feels like overkill some months.

Totally get it—insurance feels like a hassle sometimes, but I’d rather pay a little extra than risk losing the whole car to some freak accident. The mileage cap’s annoying, but honestly, the peace of mind is worth it for me too.
