Classic car insurance and the annual mileage cap - worth it?
I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve seen folks get burned when they treat the mileage cap too casually. If you ever have a claim and the odometer tells a different story, insurers can get picky - sometimes even deny coverage. The honor system works until it doesn’t, you know? I always tell people: if you think you’ll go over, ask about flexible policies or higher caps. Sometimes it’s just a few bucks more for peace of mind.

That's true, but honestly, I think some of these mileage caps are just unrealistic for folks who actually want to drive their cars. I get the risk, but sometimes it feels like the insurers use the cap as a loophole to deny claims, even if you’re just a little over. Isn't the whole point of insurance to cover the unexpected? I’d rather risk it and actually enjoy my car than let it sit in the garage just to stay under some arbitrary number.
Honestly, I’ve run into this too. The mileage cap can feel pretty restrictive, especially if you actually want to take your car out for more than the occasional weekend spin. I get that insurers are trying to limit risk, but it does seem a bit rigid - like, does 500 extra miles really make a difference? I ended up switching to a policy with a higher cap and a slightly higher premium. Worth it for the peace of mind and not having to stress every time I want to go for a drive.
Has anyone actually gotten dinged for going over the cap? I’m always worried about that, but I wonder how closely they track it unless you file a claim. Also, do you think the higher premium is really worth it if you only go over by a few hundred miles a year?
Never actually heard of anyone getting penalized unless they had to file a claim and the mileage didn’t match up. I guess if you’re only over by a couple hundred, it’s probably not a big deal, but I always wonder if it’s worth stressing about.
- Has anyone had their odometer checked during renewal or inspection?
- I’m curious if the companies actually cross-check mileage with service records or just trust what you report.
- For me, the higher premium only makes sense if you know you’ll be way over the cap.
Do most people just estimate their miles or actually track them closely?
