Classic car insurance and the annual mileage cap—worth it?

I totally get that “math test” feeling. I remember last summer, I was halfway through a backroads drive and realized I’d already burned through most of my annual miles. Ended up cutting the trip short just to play it safe. It’s a bit of a buzzkill, but honestly, I’d rather have the lower premium and keep the car protected. Unlimited miles would be nice, but I’d probably end up paying for it in the long run.

That “math test” feeling is spot on. I’ve had clients call me from the side of the road, calculator in hand, trying to figure out if they can squeeze in one more cruise before hitting their cap. Honestly, I get it—nobody wants to risk losing coverage over a few extra miles. But I’ve also seen folks pay for unlimited miles and then barely drive their classic all year. It’s a weird trade-off... peace of mind versus actually getting out there and enjoying the car. Sometimes I wonder if the cap makes us appreciate those drives more, or just stresses us out.

I know that stress all too well. I used to keep a little notebook in the glovebox just to track my miles, which felt a bit over the top, but it kept me from going over. The cap does make me plan my drives more carefully, but honestly, sometimes it takes the fun out of just hopping in and going for a spin. Unlimited miles sounds great, but then I start worrying about the extra cost... and whether I’ll even use it. It’s a tough call—guess it depends on how spontaneous you like to be with your car.

I totally get that—tracking miles can feel like a chore, but it’s kind of necessary with those caps. I’ve seen some folks end up paying more for unlimited and barely use the extra miles. Have you ever actually gone over your cap, or do you usually stay under?
