Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

I get that the tech is old, but I’m not totally convinced it’s just about outdated systems. Plenty of companies manage to update their POS software when they really want to—especially if it means more sales or happier customers. Sometimes I wonder if there’s a business reason behind not allowing multiple discounts at once, even if they blame the tech. Just feels a bit too convenient, you know?

I’ve wondered the same thing, honestly. It’s hard to believe it’s just “old tech” when you see other stores letting you stack deals without a hitch. My guess? They’re trying to protect their margins—if everyone used points and coupons together, they’d lose out on more profit per sale. I get it from a business angle, but as a customer, it’s frustrating. I always feel like I’m leaving money on the table.

- I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not totally convinced it’s just about protecting margins.
- Some stores have weird systems that just can’t handle stacking, especially if their rewards program was tacked on later.
- I’ve seen places update their tech and suddenly allow more combos, so maybe it’s partly about not wanting to invest in upgrades?
- Honestly, I’ve had times where a cashier manually applied both for me, so sometimes it’s just the system being clunky, not policy.
- Still, yeah, it feels like we’re missing out... but I’m not sure it’s always intentional.

I’ve run into this at auto parts stores, actually. Sometimes you can stack rewards and coupons, sometimes you can’t, and it’s never clear why. I get the tech excuse, but if a cashier can override it, then it’s not really about the system, is it? Makes me wonder if it’s just up to whoever’s working that day. Has anyone actually asked a manager about it and gotten a straight answer?

I get what you’re saying, but I’m not sure it’s always just up to the cashier. Sometimes they really can’t override it, or maybe they’re not supposed to. I’ve had a manager tell me once that stacking isn’t allowed “per policy,” even though the register would let them do it. Makes me wonder if it’s more about the store covering themselves if someone higher up checks receipts later... Anyone else ever get told it’s a corporate thing rather than a tech issue?
