Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

I’ve had them override it a couple times, but honestly, it felt like the cashier was just as surprised as I was that it worked. Most of the time, they just shrug and say “the system won’t let me.” I get why stores want to limit stacking deals, but it’s annoying when you’ve saved up points and have a coupon, only to find out you can’t use both. Once, a manager let it slide because I’d driven pretty far—guess it depends on who you get and how much hassle they’re willing to deal with.

Honestly, I’ve run into this too and it’s frustrating, especially when you plan your shopping trip around those savings. I get that stores have to protect their bottom line, but if you’re loyal and saving up points, it feels like you should get a little more flexibility. I’ve started asking before I even start shopping—sometimes they’ll give you a heads up if it’s a hard no, and it saves me the headache at checkout. Not ideal, but at least you know what to expect.

It’s wild how complicated they make it. I mean, you’d think if you’ve put in the effort to rack up points and you’ve got a coupon, that should be a win-win, right? But nope, there’s always some fine print or weird restriction. I get that stores want to keep things “fair,” but honestly, sometimes it just feels like they’re hoping we’ll give up and pay full price. I always feel like I’m playing some kind of savings chess match... and usually losing.

That’s exactly it. I’ve had times where I thought I’d finally figured out the “system” and then, surprise, there’s a new rule or some random exclusion. It’s almost like they’re counting on us missing a step. I get wanting to protect their bottom line, but it does make me double-check everything before I even try to use points or coupons. Honestly, sometimes I just skip the hassle and pay, which is probably what they want.

That’s the trap, right? They make it just annoying enough that you give up on the “deal” and pay full price. I get that businesses need to make money, but at what point does it stop being a reward system and just turn into a headache? Has anyone actually managed to stack points and coupons without a hitch, or is that just a myth?
