Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

- Tried stacking points and a coupon at a chain store once—ended up holding up the line while the cashier called for a manager. Felt like I was trying to hack the system just to save $5.
- Honestly, I get why they don’t want us doubling up, but if I can combine discounts on a luxury watch, why not brake pads?
- Maybe it’s just their way of making sure we never actually use the points we earn... wouldn’t be shocked.
- Still, every now and then I’ll ask, just in case they’ve changed the rules. Usually get a polite “nope.”

Honestly, I don’t get why it’s such a big deal to use both. Isn’t the whole point of earning points to actually spend them? Feels like they just want us to forget about them until they expire. I tried once at an auto parts store, too—same thing, got the “need a manager” routine and then a hard no. Kind of wild how it’s easier to stack discounts on big-ticket stuff but not basic things like brake pads. Makes you wonder who’s making these rules...

I get where you’re coming from, but I kinda see why they do it. I worked retail ages ago and the system just freaked out if you tried to stack stuff. Not saying it’s fair—just that sometimes it’s more about clunky tech than some evil scheme. Still annoying though, especially when you’ve actually saved up a decent chunk of points.

Yeah, I totally get the frustration. It’s wild how outdated some of these checkout systems are—like, you’d think with all the tech upgrades everywhere else, stacking a coupon and points wouldn’t break things. I’ve run into this at grocery stores too, and it always feels like you’re missing out on rewards you’ve actually earned. Makes you wonder if any stores have figured out a way around it, or if it’s just one of those “it’s always been this way” things. Either way, you’re not alone... it’s definitely annoying.

I always wonder if it’s just a sneaky way to limit how much we save. Like, their systems can scan a driver’s license barcode but freak out over two discounts? Feels like they’re stuck in the slow lane on purpose sometimes...
