Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Yeah, the “one or the other” rule drives me nuts. I get that they don’t want people double-dipping, but it’s not like we’re asking for a free engine. Honestly, half the time I think the cashiers are just as confused as we are. Local shops definitely treat you better—my guy once fixed a slow leak for free just because I’d been in before. Big chains? You’re lucky if they remember your name, let alone cut you a break.

It’s wild how the “one or the other” thing feels like a game you’re destined to lose. I tried stacking a coupon with points once and the cashier looked at me like I’d asked for their car keys. Is it just me, or do the rules change every time? Local shops just get it… maybe they know our pain from the DMV lines.

It’s not just you. I swear, every time I think I’ve figured out the “rules,” they change the game. Last week, I tried to use a store credit and a manufacturer coupon on some car seat covers—no dice. The cashier just shrugged and said, “System won’t let me.” It’s like they want us to do calculus just to save a few bucks. Local shops really do seem to care more, or at least they’re willing to bend a little. Maybe it’s because they actually know their customers, not just their loyalty card numbers.

I tried to use my rewards points and a coupon at the pharmacy once—no luck. The cashier just gave me that “don’t shoot the messenger” look. I get that there are policies, but it always feels like a moving target. Local hardware store down the street? They’ll just knock a couple bucks off if you ask. Makes me wonder if the big chains make it complicated on purpose...

It really does feel like the big chains have a playbook for making things confusing, doesn’t it? I’ve run into that same wall trying to stack deals—points, coupons, digital offers—only to get told “you have to pick one.” Meanwhile, the smaller places just use common sense. If you’re a regular or you ask nicely, they’ll find a way to help you out. It’s like they actually want you to come back.

I get that the big guys have all these systems and policies, but sometimes it just feels unnecessary. Like, what’s the harm in letting someone use their points and a coupon on the same transaction? It’s not like you’re gaming the system—you earned those points, and the coupon is out there for anyone to use. I honestly think they make it complicated so fewer people end up using both, which saves them money in the long run. Maybe that’s a bit cynical, but after a few too many “Sorry, can’t do that” moments, you start to wonder.

One thing I learned: sometimes the app or the website will let you stack deals even if the store says you can’t. I’ve had luck ordering online for pickup, using both a coupon code and my points, and then just grabbing it at the counter. Not saying it works everywhere, but it’s worth a shot if you’re tired of getting that helpless look from the cashier.

At the end of the day, I’d rather support the local spots anyway. At least they treat you like a person, not just a transaction. But yeah, it’s frustrating when you know you’ve got these rewards and discounts lined up, and you still walk out feeling like you missed out.
