Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?
Had a similar run-in at the pharmacy with cold meds. Tried to use my digital coupon and points - register just locked up, cashier shrugged. Manager said, “System won’t let us do both.”
-
“Half the time, even the employees don’t know what works and what doesn’t.”
100% agree. One week it’s fine, next week it’s not.
- Feels like they want us confused so we just pay up.
- I get not wanting to stack deals, but why make it a guessing game?
- Wouldn’t shock me if it’s on purpose... but maybe their system is just that clunky.
Either way, it’s a hassle.
- Ran into this exact mess last month trying to grab allergy meds. Had a paper coupon and tried to use my rewards points - register just beeped and froze up. Cashier looked at me like I was speaking another language.
- Honestly, I think half the time the system just glitches out. But yeah, it does feel like they want us to give up and pay full price.
- I get not stacking deals, but at least make it clear up front. Tired of standing there holding up the line while they call for a manager.
- At this point, I just pick whichever discount is bigger and hope for the best... not worth the hassle arguing every time.

Honestly, I get wanting to keep it simple, but sometimes I’ll actually ask the cashier to try both - like, “Can you see if the points work after the coupon?” I’ve had it go through a couple times, especially if you scan things in a certain order. It’s hit or miss, but I’ve saved a few bucks that way. Might be worth a shot before giving up on stacking completely.
I swear, the checkout lane is starting to feel like a game show - “Will Your Discount Stack?!” Half the time I’m standing there, sweating, hoping the stars align and both the points and coupon actually work. Has anyone else noticed it seems to depend on which cashier you get? Some are total coupon wizards and will try every trick in the book, while others just give you that look like, “Nope, system says no.”
I’ve tried the “scan this first, then that” routine too. Sometimes it works, sometimes it’s like the register just laughs at me. I always wonder if there’s some secret order - like, is it points first, then coupon? Or does it depend on the phase of the moon? I’ve even had one cashier tell me it’s all about whether you hit “redeem” before or after scanning your loyalty card. Not sure if that’s true or just checkout folklore.
Honestly, I get why people just pick the bigger discount and call it a day. But every now and then, when both go through, it feels like winning the lottery (well, a very tiny lottery). Is there some official rule about this stuff, or is it just chaos behind the scenes? I’d love to know if anyone’s cracked the code - or if we’re all just rolling dice at this point.
And don’t even get me started on self-checkout. That thing has rejected more of my coupons than my dog rejects his allergy pills...
There’s definitely no universal logic to it, and I’ve spent way too much time trying to “crack the code” myself. You’re right, it’s like a weird lottery where sometimes you get the jackpot and sometimes you walk away grumbling about the system. I’ve noticed the same thing with cashiers - some are super helpful and know how to finesse the register, while others just shrug and say, “Sorry, can’t do it.” I don’t even think it’s their fault half the time; the software seems designed to make things as confusing as possible.
I’ve read the fine print on a bunch of store policies, and most of them leave room for “manager discretion” or have these vague lines about “cannot be combined with other offers,” but then the register sometimes just allows it anyway. I’ve even had one cashier tell me it depends on whether it’s a manufacturer coupon or a store coupon, or if the points are a “reward” versus a “discount.” It’s like they want us to need a degree in checkout science.
Honestly, I think they almost count on people getting frustrated and just accepting whatever comes off first. But I totally get that rush when both discounts work - last time I managed it at the gas station, I felt like I’d just won a game show. It’s not a huge amount, but hey, every dollar counts, especially with how prices are right now.
Self-checkout is a whole other beast. I’ve had it reject perfectly valid coupons, or freeze until someone comes over and just overrides everything. At this point, I treat self-checkout like a slot machine - sometimes you win, sometimes you just get annoyed.
Don’t let the randomness get you down. If you’re willing to experiment a bit and keep track of what works (and with which cashiers), you can stack those savings more often than not. Just takes a bit of stubbornness and maybe some luck with who’s behind the register. And if all else fails, at least you know you tried to beat the system... which is a small victory in itself.
