Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?
Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?
That “urban legend” about someone stacking both points and a coupon? I’ve heard it too, but I’m convinced it’s just one of those stories that gets passed around to keep hope alive. I’ve tried every trick in the book - timing my purchases, reading the fine print, even asking the cashier if there’s a secret handshake I’m missing. No dice. It’s always one or the other, never both.
I get what you mean about the points expiring out of nowhere. Lost a decent chunk myself last year because I thought they’d last longer. Now, whenever I see that little “expiring soon” warning, I treat it like a check engine light - ignore it at your own risk. The banana analogy is spot on, by the way. Points do seem to go from ripe to rotten overnight.
From the business side, I guess they’re trying to avoid giving away too much at once, but as a customer, it just feels like they’re nickel-and-diming us. If I’ve earned the points and have a coupon, why not let me use both? It’s not like I’m asking for a free set of tires every month. Just feels like a missed opportunity for them to build some real loyalty.
I’ve started using my points on smaller purchases just to make sure they don’t disappear. It’s not as satisfying as saving up for something big, but at least I’m not left with a bunch of useless numbers in my account. Still, every time I see a new promo email, I can’t help but wonder if this will finally be the time they let us double dip... but nope, same old story.
Maybe one day they’ll loosen up, but until then, I’ll keep treating my points like milk in the fridge - use ‘em before they turn sour.

- Totally get this. I tried stacking once, thinking maybe the app glitched or something. Nope, just got that “not eligible” pop-up.
- The points expiring thing is wild. I lost mine while waiting for a “big” deal that never came.
- Feels like they want us to play a game we can’t win. Maybe it’s their way of keeping us coming back, but honestly, it’s just kind of annoying.
- At this point, I use points on whatever - gum, batteries, whatever’s cheapest - just so they don’t vanish.
- Still holding out hope for that mythical double dip... but yeah, not holding my breath.
I hear you on the points expiring. I once saved mine for months, thinking I’d finally catch a solid deal on windshield wipers. By the time I checked again, half my points were gone. Now I just grab a coffee or something small before they disappear. Seems like the system’s designed to make us spend more, not less... but maybe that’s just me being cynical.

I get what you mean. I tried stacking a coupon with points for an oil change once, but the cashier said it was “one or the other.” Kinda defeats the whole point system for me. I just use them on snacks now before they’re gone.
Honestly, it does feel like a bit of a bait-and-switch sometimes. You rack up points thinking you’ll get a decent deal, but then there’s always some catch in the fine print. I’ve run into the same “one or the other” rule at a few places - makes you wonder what’s the point of loyalty programs if you can’t actually maximize your savings. Still, I guess using points on snacks is better than letting them expire... but yeah, it’s kind of underwhelming when you think about what they promise versus what you actually get.
