Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

“Half the time it depends on who’s working that day or which way the wind’s blowing. The rules seem made up as they go along.”

That’s honestly how it feels at the pharmacy too—sometimes you can stack a manufacturer coupon with points, sometimes you can’t, and there’s no clear reason. I wonder if stores are just worried about people gaming the system, or if it’s more about keeping things simple for their staff. Has anyone actually gotten a straight answer from a manager about why these policies are so inconsistent?

I’ve actually tried to get a straight answer about this at my local grocery store, and the manager just kind of shrugged and said, “It depends on the system.” Not super helpful. I wonder if it’s partly because the registers are programmed differently for each promotion, or maybe there’s some fine print we’re all missing? Has anyone ever actually read all the terms on those coupons and points programs? Sometimes I feel like they make it intentionally confusing so fewer people bother.

I’ve wondered the same thing, honestly. I actually tried reading through the fine print on one of those “earn double points” promos, and it was a maze—like, certain brands excluded, can’t combine with other offers, etc. I started making a checklist to see if I could ever stack a coupon with points, but it always comes down to some weird exception. Has anyone tried asking customer service for a written policy? I’m curious if it’s just a programming thing or if there’s a legal reason behind it.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s always about making it confusing on purpose. Sometimes it just feels like they’re protecting their bottom line. If everyone stacked every deal, they’d lose money fast. I tried asking for a written policy once and just got a generic FAQ link—nothing specific. Maybe it’s just how the system is set up, not some big conspiracy. Still annoying, though.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I remember trying to use my dealership rewards and a promo code on some accessories—thought I was being clever, but nope, system just wouldn’t let me stack them. The sales guy just shrugged and pointed to the “policy.” It’s frustrating, especially when you feel like you’ve earned those points. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere, but it does feel a bit stingy at times. Still, every now and then you catch a good deal, so I try not to let it bug me too much.
