Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

It’s like finding out your favorite shortcut is closed for construction.

- Been there, felt that. Last year I tried to stack my points and a coupon on a set of all-weather floor mats right before a big trip. Already had the route planned, snacks packed, and then—cashier hits me with the “one or the other” line. Had to stand there redoing mental math while the line grew behind me. Not my favorite pit stop.

- I always double-check the fine print now, even though it’s usually written in font size -2 and buried somewhere random. Still, I’d rather know up front than have to make a split-second call at the register.

- I get why stores do it, but honestly, if you’re loyal enough to rack up points and you’ve got a coupon, shouldn’t you get a little more flexibility? Especially on stuff like wipers or mats—practical things, not luxury splurges.

- Noticed some places do a better job flagging this in their app or at self-checkout. Others? You find out after you swipe your card. Feels like a detour you could’ve avoided.

- I’m all for saving a few bucks, but I’d rather avoid surprises. Nothing throws off my pre-trip checklist like having to pick between points and a coupon at the last minute.

- Guess it’s just one of those “risk management” things—expect the unexpected, even at the checkout lane.

That’s the worst, especially when you’re in a rush. I’ve found some stores let you do both if you use their app, but it’s hit or miss. Fine print always gets me too—sometimes it feels like they make it hard on purpose.

Title: Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

I’ve run into this exact thing at the pharmacy, and it’s honestly baffling. You’d think if you’ve earned points and have a coupon, you should be able to stack them, right? I remember standing in line with a growing queue behind me, trying to figure out if I’d save more by using my points or the $10 off coupon. The cashier was sympathetic but couldn’t override the system. Ended up just picking one and feeling like I left money on the table.

I get that there are probably backend reasons—systems not talking to each other, or maybe it’s just a way to limit how much they give away. But from a customer perspective, it feels unnecessarily complicated. The fine print is always buried somewhere, and it’s not like you’re going to stop and read the whole policy while people are waiting behind you. I’ve even had a manager try to help me once, but their hands were tied too.

Funny enough, I’ve noticed some stores are more flexible if you check out online or use their app. Last week, I managed to use both a coupon and points at a grocery store’s app, but when I tried the same thing in person, no luck. It’s inconsistent, and honestly, a bit frustrating.

I do wonder if it’s intentional, or just a side effect of old systems and policies that haven’t kept up with how people actually shop now. Either way, it definitely throws a wrench in the works, especially when you’re trying to maximize savings on a tight schedule.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had to make that same choice at the register, and it always feels like you’re missing out on savings you’ve earned. It’s probably a mix of outdated systems and companies wanting to limit discounts, but either way, it’s not great for customers. I usually check the app first now, since like you said, sometimes you can stack deals there. Not ideal, but every little bit helps.

Honestly, I’ve run into this too and it drives me nuts. Here’s my routine: I check the app for stackable deals, then ask at the register if I can use both. Sometimes they’ll let it slide, sometimes not. Feels like a game of savings roulette... but hey, every dollar counts, right?
