Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?
It’s honestly frustrating because you’d think these systems would be smarter by now.
Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had the same thing happen at a couple different chains, and it always feels like a bit of a letdown—especially when you’ve planned your fill-up around getting the best deal. I’ve even tried asking the cashier if there’s a workaround, but usually I just get that same shrug you mentioned. Makes you wonder if they’re just as confused as we are.
I’ve dug through some of the fine print before (not exactly thrilling reading, but sometimes you gotta), and it seems like a lot of places have a “one discount per transaction” rule buried in there. I guess it’s their way of making sure we don’t stack up too many savings at once, but it does seem a little stingy. If the tech can track points and coupons separately, why not let us use both? Or at least make it clear up front that you can’t.
Planning road trips gets tricky when you’re counting on those discounts to stretch your budget. I’ve started carrying a backup gift card just in case my points or coupons don’t go through, but it’s not ideal. Have you noticed if it’s worse at certain chains, or is it just random? I’ve had better luck at smaller stations, weirdly enough, but maybe that’s just coincidence.
Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in this. It’s annoying, but I guess the best we can do is double-check the rules ahead of time and hope for the best. If you ever find a station that actually lets you stack both, let us know—feels like finding a unicorn these days...
It’s wild how every chain seems to have its own secret menu of rules. I’ve actually had a cashier tell me, “You can use points or a coupon, but not both—computer says no.” Makes me wonder if it’s just a software limitation or if they’re really trying to keep us from saving too much. Has anyone ever actually gotten a straight answer from corporate, or is it always just the fine print shuffle?
Honestly, I think it’s less about “keeping us from saving too much” and more about how their systems are set up.
That’s probably true for a lot of places. I’ve read some chains just don’t have the tech to stack discounts, or they’re worried about people double-dipping. I’ve checked the fine print a few times and it usually spells it out, but it’s buried. Not sure it’s some big conspiracy—just kind of clunky policy and outdated software.“You can use points or a coupon, but not both—computer says no.”
Yeah, I’ve run into this too and it always feels like the checkout is judging me for trying to be “too clever.” I get that some of these systems are ancient—like, “built when dial-up was a thing” ancient—but it still cracks me up that in 2024, my phone can recognize my face but the register can’t handle two discounts at once.
I do think there’s a bit of “we don’t want you stacking deals” going on, though. If it was just about tech, you’d think at least one chain would have figured it out by now. But nah, we’re all stuck playing coupon roulette and hoping the cashier doesn’t give us the side-eye when we ask if we can use both.
Honestly, I just wish they’d be upfront about it instead of hiding the rules in size-2 font on the back of the receipt. Would save everyone a lot of time (and awkward conversations at the register).
- Totally get where you’re coming from.

That line cracked me up—so true.“my phone can recognize my face but the register can’t handle two discounts at once.”
- It’s wild how some stores still act like stacking deals is some kind of secret hack.
- I’ve had cashiers look at me like I’m trying to pull a fast one, when really I just want to use what I’ve earned.
- The fine print thing is the worst. You shouldn’t need a magnifying glass just to know the rules.
- Hang in there—sometimes it’s just about persistence (and maybe a little luck).
