Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

One time, a cashier actually let me use my points on one item and the coupon on another, but that’s rare. It’s a bit of a hassle, but sometimes you can work around it if you’re persistent.

I’ve noticed the same thing—most stores have a policy that prevents stacking points and coupons, usually buried in the terms. Like you mentioned, splitting transactions can work, but it depends on the cashier and how strict they are. One thing I do is ask if the coupon applies after points are redeemed, since sometimes the system calculates discounts differently. It’s not always consistent, though. If you’re trying to maximize savings, it’s worth double-checking the store’s app or website before you go. Sometimes there are digital-only deals that stack when paper ones won’t.

Honestly, I don’t get why it has to be so complicated. If I’ve earned the points and have a coupon, why can’t I just use both? Feels like they make it confusing on purpose. Anyone ever had a cashier just override it without making a fuss? That’s happened to me once, but usually it’s a hard no.

I’ve wondered the same thing, honestly. Every time I try to stack rewards, it feels like I’m trying to outsmart some secret system—like, why does it have to feel like hacking the mainframe just to use a coupon with my points? I get that there are “policies” but sometimes it just feels like they’re making it as confusing as possible so people give up and don’t bother. I can’t tell if it’s just bureaucracy or if they’re hoping we’ll forget about the points altogether.

About cashiers overriding it... I’ve had that happen once, too. It was super chill, the cashier just shrugged and said, “I don’t see why not,” and punched it in. But every other time? It’s like I’m asking for a government secret. I always wonder if it’s actually against the rules or if it’s just up to whoever’s working that day. Is it a software thing, or are they just told not to do it? And why do some stores in the same chain let it slide and others act like I’m robbing the place?

The other thing that bugs me—if the app or website lets you use both at once, why can’t the register do it? Are they running on different systems or something? Seems like if they wanted us to feel rewarded for our loyalty, they’d make it easy, not turn it into a puzzle. Maybe I’m missing something, but I just don’t see the harm in letting people use both. Unless there’s some secret “customer happiness threshold” they’re trying not to cross...

Just makes me laugh sometimes how complicated saving a couple bucks can get. Maybe one day they’ll make it simple, but I’m not holding my breath.

- I totally get what you mean about feeling like you’re trying to crack some code just to save a few bucks.
- From what I’ve seen, it’s usually a mix of outdated systems and company policy—sometimes the register literally won’t let them stack, even if the cashier wants to help.
- I’ve had cashiers try to override it for me too, but it’s hit or miss. Seems like some stores are more flexible, or maybe just have managers who don’t mind bending the rules a bit.
- The app vs. register thing is wild. You’d think everything would be synced up by now, but apparently not.
- Do you think they’re actually losing money when people stack rewards, or is it just about keeping things “simple” for their accounting?

It’s wild how often the tech just doesn’t match up. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually a combo of system limitations and policy. The register software is often programmed to block stacking, even if the cashier wants to help. I doubt it’s always about losing money—more like keeping things straightforward for accounting and avoiding errors. But yeah, sometimes it feels like you need a manual just to use your points and a coupon together. I’ve had better luck when I ask if they can apply one at checkout and then use the other on a future purchase, but it’s definitely hit or miss depending on the store.
