Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?

Couldn’t agree more about the confusion at checkout. It drives me nuts—especially when you think you’re stacking up a nice discount, and then the cashier just shrugs and says “can’t do both.” I mean, if I can combine points and coupons at the auto parts store, why not at the grocery store? Feels like they’re hoping we just give up and pay full price half the time.

I stick with it, though, because every little bit helps—especially when you’re budgeting for a project car and groceries. I’ve noticed sometimes it depends on the cashier, too. Some know the workarounds, some just don’t want to deal with it. Honestly, I wish they’d just be upfront about what works and what doesn’t—like a quick message on the card reader or something. Would save everyone a headache.

Don’t let it stop you from collecting points, though. Even if it’s a hassle, those rewards add up over time. Sometimes you gotta be stubborn to get your money’s worth.

I get the frustration, but I kinda see why they do it. Last summer, I was on a long road trip and stopped at a grocery chain in another state—totally different coupon rules than back home. The cashier explained that stacking discounts can mess with their system or something about “double dipping.” Not sure I buy all of it, but I guess if everyone could stack everything, they’d lose money fast. Still, it’s wild how one store lets you and another won’t. Feels like a coin toss every time.

Yeah, it’s super inconsistent. I’ve had the same thing happen—one store’s happy to let me use points and a coupon, next place acts like I’m trying to rob the register. I get that they don’t want people double dipping, but honestly, half the time it feels like they just haven’t updated their systems or trained staff right. If they really cared about “losing money,” they’d just make the rules clear everywhere, right? The randomness is what bugs me most.

Yeah, that’s probably it. I’ve run into this with loyalty programs at pharmacies too. Some cashiers just don’t know the policies, or the register won’t let them stack deals. I always ask for the manager if it’s a big purchase—sometimes they’ll override it, sometimes not. It’s annoying but I guess stores want to keep some wiggle room.

Honestly, I’m not convinced it’s just outdated systems or clueless staff. Sometimes I think they make it confusing on purpose—like, if I can’t figure out how to use my points and coupon, they save money. Reminds me of when I tried to use a “free car wash” coupon at the dealership and somehow still ended up paying for tire shine. It’s like a game of “gotcha” at checkout...
