I just bought my first car and honestly, the insurance stuff is way more confusing than I expected. I went with the minimum at first because it was cheaper, but then my friend rear-ended a BMW and his insurance barely covered half the repairs. He’s still paying off the rest. Didn’t realize how fast those costs add up until you see it happen to someone you know. Makes me rethink if saving a few bucks up front is really worth it...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I did the same thing—just went with the cheapest coverage because I figured “what are the odds?” But when you see those repair bills, especially for luxury cars, it’s a wake-up call. The minimum barely covers anything if you’re in a real accident. Honestly, if you can swing it, bumping up your liability limits is worth it. It’s not fun paying more each month, but it beats owing thousands if something goes sideways.

You nailed it—minimum coverage is just that, the bare minimum. Seen too many people think they’re saving money, then get slammed with bills after a fender bender. It’s not about fear, just common sense if you can afford it.

Honestly, I’ve seen folks surprised by how quickly those minimums get eaten up, even in what seems like a “minor” accident. Have you ever looked at the cost difference between bumping up coverage and just sticking with the state minimums? Sometimes it’s not as much as people think.

- I’ve run the numbers a few times, and honestly, the jump from state minimums to something like 50/100 or even 100/300 isn’t as steep as people expect. Especially when you factor in what you’d be on the hook for if you actually total someone’s new-ish car or they wind up with a big hospital bill.
- Had a buddy with a ‘67 Mustang who got rear-ended—other driver had minimums and it didn’t even come close to covering the repairs. He spent months fighting just to get enough to fix it right.
- Not saying everyone needs max coverage, but it’s wild how fast those limits disappear when you’re dealing with anything newer or medical stuff.
- Curious if anyone’s ever had their rates jump way up after increasing coverage? I’ve heard mixed stories—some say it barely moved, others claim it doubled. Wonder if it depends more on the car or your record...
