Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. I used to think, “I’m a careful driver, why would I need more than the minimum?” But then my cousin got into a fender bender—nothing major, just a tap in traffic. The other car had some hidden damage and their repair bill was way more than what her insurance covered.

- Like you said,

“the minimums always seemed like a no-brainer when I first started driving, but the reality is... they’re not really built for when things go sideways.”
That’s exactly it.
- For me, the extra couple bucks for better liability was worth it. I’d rather have peace of mind than be stressing about bills later.
- Honestly, seeing how fast costs add up after even a small accident made me rethink everything.

Not saying everyone needs all the bells and whistles, but yeah... those state minimums feel kinda outdated once you’ve seen how little they actually do when you need them.

Honestly, I used to think the same thing—like, why pay more if I’m a decent driver? But then I watched a coworker get stuck with a bill for someone else’s bumper that was way more than the minimum covered. It’s wild how fast those repair costs add up, especially in California. I get wanting to save money, but it feels like the “minimum” is just barely enough for a fender bender, let alone anything bigger. I’d rather pay a little extra each month than risk draining my savings over something small.

Yeah, I hear you. I used to think I was being smart by just sticking with the minimum, but after a road trip buddy of mine got rear-ended in LA, the costs were way more than what his insurance covered. He ended up dipping into his vacation fund just to pay off the difference. It’s wild how expensive even “minor” accidents can get out here. These days, I’d rather have that peace of mind, especially since I’m on the road so much.

I’ve seen that play out way too often—folks think the minimum’s enough until something actually happens. I remember a claim where a guy rear-ended someone in heavy traffic, and the other driver’s medical bills alone were double his coverage. He was shocked at how fast those numbers add up. Ever notice how even a fender bender in California can spiral into thousands? Makes you wonder if saving a few bucks each month is really worth the risk.

That’s the thing—people don’t realize how quick it goes from “just a scratch” to “I owe thousands.” I had a buddy who thought he was fine with the minimum, then got sideswiped by someone with no insurance. He ended up paying out of pocket for months. Ever wonder if uninsured motorist coverage is just as important as upping your liability?
